SUMMARY:Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Christmas\, Christian festival celebrating the birth of Jesus. The English term Christmas (“mass on Christ’s day”) is of fairly recent origin. The earlier term Yule may have derived from the Germanic jōl or the Anglo-Saxon geōl\, which referred to the feast of the winter solstice. The corresponding terms in other languages—Navidad in Spanish\, Natale in Italian\, Noël in French—all probably denote nativity. The German word Weihnachten denotes “hallowed night.” Since the early 20th century\, Christmas has also been a secular family holiday\, observed by Christians and non-Christians alike\, devoid of Christian elements\, and marked by an increasingly elaborate exchange of gifts. In this secular Christmas celebration\, a mythical figure named Santa Claus plays the pivotal role. \n\n\nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/topic/Christmas

SUMMARY:Bodhi Day (Rohatsu)
DESCRIPTION:Bodhi Day is being observed by Buddhists worldwide. \nThe word “bodhi” originates from a verb that means “to awaken” or “awakened” in Pali and Sanskrit\, two ancient Indian languages. It is commonly considered to indicate “enlightenment” in Buddhism. \n\n\n\n\nBodhi Day honours the moment 2\,600 years ago when Siddhartha Gautama became enlightened\, or awakened\, to become the Buddha. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSourced from https://www.standard.co.uk/news/world/bodhi-day-why-buddhists-celebrate-japan-b1125808.html

SUMMARY:Advent 2024
DESCRIPTION:Advent\, (from Latin adventus\, “coming”)\, in the Christian church calendar\, the period of preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas and also of preparation for the Second Coming of Christ. In Western churches\, Advent begins on the Sunday nearest to November 30 (St. Andrew’s Day) and is the beginning of the liturgical year. In many Eastern churches\, the Nativity Fast is a similar period of penance and preparation that occurs during the 40 days before Christmas. The date when the season was first observed is uncertain. Bishop Perpetuus of Tours (461–490) established a fast before Christmas that began on November 11 (St. Martin’s Day)\, and the Council of Tours (567) mentioned an Advent season. \nThe liturgical meaning of the Advent season referred to the dual “coming” of Jesus—then Roman Catholicism the traditional liturgical colour for Advent is violet; many Protestant denominations have adopted blue or purple. The third Sunday of Advent\, known as Gaudete Sunday\, is commonly marked by the use of rose-coloured vestments and candles. \nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/topic/Advent

SUMMARY:The Day of the Covenant
DESCRIPTION:The Day of the Covenant is a Baha’i holy day honoring the Covenant of Baha’u’llah and\, in particular\, ‘Abdu’l-Baha (1844–1921) as the “Centre of the Covenant.” …the Covenant established by Baha’u’llah protects the Baha’i religion from schism. In anticipation of his eventual passing\, Baha’u’llah called on all Baha’is to turn to ‘Abdu’l-Baha (Baha’u’llah’s eldest son) as successor (inerrant leader of the Baha’i community)\, interpreter (authorized exponent of Baha’u’llah’s teachings)\, and exemplar (perfect embodiment of Baha’i virtues and morality). This triple function has been as powerful in its influence on the future course and fortunes of the Baha’i community as ‘Abdu’l-Baha’s station is conceptually and functionally distinctive\, and remains so. \nSourced from https://www.bahai.us/day-of-the-covenant

SUMMARY:Guru Nanak Jayanti
DESCRIPTION:This day celebrates the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji\, founder and first Guru of Sikhism. It is considered one of the most important Sikh holy days. Most Sikhs have traditionally celebrated Guru Nanak Jayanti in November\, following the Nanakshahi calendar\, However\, some scholars believe it should be celebrated on Baisakhi Day\, usually falling in April. (The Guru was born on Baisakhi Day\, April 5\, 1469\, in what is now Punjab Province\, Pakistan. \nTwo days before the festival\, events begin that include Akhand Paath\, a 48-hour reading of the Guru Granth Sahib at gurdwaras (temples). The next day\, Sikhs visit the gurdwara to chant hymns and hold Nagar Kirtan. On the festival day\, celebrations include readings\, music\, and assemblies. At langars\, or community kitchens\, volunteers serve food and a special sweet called karah prashad. \nSourced from https://theguibordcenter.org/faiths/sikhism/sikh-festivals-and-observances/

SUMMARY:Guru Gaddi
DESCRIPTION:Guru Gobind Singh\, the tenth Sikh Guru\, installed the Siri Guru Granth Sahib as Guru October 20\, 1706. This day is celebrated today as “Guru Gaddi Day” each year. This is often celebrated with special Kirtan programs\, Akhand Paths (continuous reading of the full Siri Guru Granth Sahib) and Sikh parades. \nAt the time of His death in 1708\, Guru Gobind Singh Ji passed the mantle of the Guruship to the Siri Guru Granth Sahib. This ended the time of the physical Gurus of the Sikhs. Guru Gobind Singh Ji declared that the Word of God\, embodied in the Siri Guru Granth Sahib\, was to be Guru for the Sikhs for all time. He said: \n“O Beloved Khalsa\, let any who desire to behold me\, behold the Guru Granth. Obey the Granth Sahib\, for it is the visible body of the Guru. Let any who desire to meet me\, diligently search its Bani.” \nThe Siri Guru Granth Sahib remains the Spiritual Light and Guide for the Sikh community today. \nSourced from https://www.sikhdharma.org/topics/guru-gaddi-day-2

SUMMARY:All Saints’ Day
DESCRIPTION:All Saints’ Day\, in the Christian church\, a day commemorating all the saints of the church\, both known and unknown\, who have attained heaven. It is celebrated on November 1 in the Western churches and on the first Sunday after Pentecost in the Eastern churches. In Roman Catholicism\, the feast is usually a holy day of obligation. It is part of the three-day triduum dedicated to remembering the dead\, beginning with Halloween (October 31) and followed by All Saints’ Day (November 1) and All Souls’ Day (November 2). \nThe origin of All Saints’ Day cannot be traced with certainty\, and it has been observed on various days in different places. A feast of all martyrs was kept on May 13 in the Eastern church according to Ephraem Syrus (died c. 373)\, which may have determined the choice of May 13 by Pope Boniface IV when he dedicated the Pantheon in Rome as a church in honour of the Blessed Virgin and all martyrs in 609. The first evidence for the November 1 date of celebration and of the broadening of the festival to include all saints as well as all martyrs occurred during the reign of Pope Gregory III (731–741)\, who dedicated a chapel in St. Peter’s\, Rome\, on November 1 in honour of all saints. In 800 All Saints’ Day was kept by Alcuin on November 1\, and it also appeared in a 9th-century English calendar on that day. In 837 Pope Gregory IV ordered its general observance. In medieval England the festival was known as All Hallows\, and its eve is still known as Halloween. The period from October 31 to November 2 (All Souls’ Day) is sometimes known as Allhallowtide. \nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/topic/All-Saints-Day

SUMMARY:Shemini Atzeret 2024
DESCRIPTION:Shemini Atzeret\, (Hebrew: “Eighth Day of the Solemn Assembly”)\, a Jewish religious festival on the eighth day of Sukkoth (Feast of Booths)\, considered by some to be an independent celebration immediately following Sukkoth. In Old Testament times a distinction was made regarding sacrifices: whereas 70 sacrifices were offered on the first seven days of Sukkoth to signify the “70 nations” constituting all humanity\, a single ram and a single bullock were sacrificed on the eighth day to symbolize Israel’s special relationship to God. In Israel\, Simchat Torah is also celebrated on the eighth day of Sukkoth\, although in other countries it is celebrated on the ninth day. \nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/topic/Shemini-Atzeret

SUMMARY:Twin Holy Birthdays
DESCRIPTION:The Festivals of the Twin Birthdays or the Twin Holy Birthdays refers to two successive holy days in the Bahaʼi calendar that celebrate the births of two central figures of the Bahaʼi Faith. \nMirza Husayn-‘Ali\, later known as Baha’u’llah\, “the Glory of God\,” was born in 1817 in Tehran\, the capital of Persia\, now called Iran. \nTwo years later\, in 1819\, Siyyid ‘Ali-Muhammad was born in Shiraz\, a city in southern Persia. He later took the title\, the Bab\, meaning “the Gate.” \nThe Bab and Bahaʼu’llah are revered as central figures of the Bahaʼi Faith. Both are Manifestations of God in their own right. The lives and missions of the Bab and Bahaʼu’llah are inextricably linked. Together\, these Divine Messengers are the twin Manifestations of God for this era. \nIn 1844\, in Shiraz\, at age 25\, the Bab declared that He had been called by God to be humanity’s gateway to a new and glorious future. As one of God’s Divine Educators\, the Bab established a new religion.  He called for the people to prepare for the coming of “Him Whom God shall make manifest\,” another Divine Messenger Who would soon appear and initiate an era of global justice\, unity\, and peace. The Bab was an advocate of the poor. He supported the advancement of women\, universal education\, and the study of science—radical ideas in that time and place. \nIn April of 1863\, Baha’u’llah announced that He was the Promised One foretold by the Bab and all of the Divine Messengers of the past. Baha’u’llah’s Mission was to spiritually re-awaken humanity and unite all the peoples of the world. Through Baha’u’llah God has released a fresh\, far-reaching\, creative spiritual energy into the world. Baha’u’llah’s teachings shed new light on God’s eternal relationship with humanity and offer a vision of infinite hope and healing. \nIn the Kitab-i-Aqdas\, the central book of the Baha’i Faith\, which is the main source of Baha’i law and practices\, Bahaʼu’llah wrote that His birthday and that of Bab “are accounted as one in the sight of God.” \nTheir birthdays are observed on the first and the second day following the occurrence of the eighth new moon after the Baha’i New Year\, which is called Naw-Ruz\, and occurs on the first day of spring as determined in advance by astronomical tables using Tehran as the point of reference. This results in the observance of the Twin Birthdays moving\, year to year\, from mid-October to mid-November in the Gregorian calendar. \nSourced from https://www.bahai.us/bahai-house-of-worship-hosts-broadcasts-for-twin-holy-birthdays

SUMMARY:Ayathrem
DESCRIPTION:Ayathrem is associated with vegetation\, believed to be the first sign of life after creation. This festival marks the return of cattle from grazing in faraway lands. Zoroastrians celebrate it on the 206th to 210th days\, usually October 12 to 16. \nZoroastrians observe six seasonal festivals that celebrate the sanctity of God’s universal creations. Each Gahambar lasts five days and honors the five material creations: earth\, water\, plants\, animals and humans. Believers spend the first four days reciting scriptures and come together on the last day for a feast. \nSourced from https://theguibordcenter.org/zoroastrian-holy-days-and-observances/

SUMMARY:Dussehra
DESCRIPTION:Dussehra\, in Hinduism\, holiday marking the triumph of Rama\, an avatar of Vishnu\, over the 10-headed demon king Ravana\, who abducted Rama’s wife\, Sita. The festival’s name is derived from the Sanskrit words dasha (“ten”) and hara (“defeat”). Symbolizing the victory of good over evil\, Dussehra is celebrated on the 10th day of the month of Ashvina (September–October)\, the seventh month of the Hindu calendar\, with the appearance of the full moon\, an event called the “bright fortnight” (shukla paksha). Dussehra coincides with the culmination of the nine-day Navratri festival and with the tenth day of the Durga Puja festival. For many\, it marks the beginning of preparation for Diwali\, which occurs 20 days after Dussehra. \n\nDussehra is celebrated with great fervour and fanfare. In North India\, it incorporates Ram Lila\, a gala theatrical enactment of Rama’s life story. Effigies of Ravana—often along with those of Meghnada (Ravana’s son) and Kumbhkarana (Ravana’s brother)—are stuffed with firecrackers and set ablaze at night in open fields. \nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/topic/Dussehra

SUMMARY:Yom Kippur 2024
DESCRIPTION:Yom Kippur—the Day of Atonement—is considered the most important holiday in the Jewish faith. Falling in the month of Tishrei (September or October in the Gregorian calendar)\, it marks the culmination of the 10 Days of Awe\, a period of introspection and repentance that follows Rosh Hashanah\, the Jewish New Year. According to tradition\, it is on Yom Kippur that God decides each person’s fate\, so Jews are encouraged to make amends and ask forgiveness for sins committed during the past year. SUMMARY:Mehregan
DESCRIPTION:Mehregan is the Persian Festival of Autumn\, honoring Mehr\, the goddess of light\, friendship\, love and kindness. A reminder of Zoroastrianism’s “good words\, good deeds and good thoughts\,” the festival also celebrates the fall harvest. It takes place on the 10th of the month of Mehr\, usually in October. \nOn the occasion\, believers set up a table with the Khordeh Avesta (a book of prayers)\, a mirror\, and a sormeh dan (container of kohl eyeliner). The table also holds flowers\, vegetables and fruits\, rosewater\, sweets\, nuts\, and incense. At lunchtime\, family members stand in front of the mirror to pray. After drinking sherbet\, everyone rubs kohl around their eyes as a good omen. They embrace and toss herbs and seeds over each other’s heads. In the evening\, celebrants recite prayers\, light bonfires and fireworks\, and enjoy a feast. \nSourced from https://theguibordcenter.org/zoroastrian-holy-days-and-observances/

SUMMARY:Ganesh Chaturthi (Vinayaka Chaturthi) 2024
DESCRIPTION:Ganesh Chaturthi\, also called Vinayaka Chaturthi\, in Hinduism\, 10-day festival marking the birth of the elephant-headed deity Ganesha\, the god of prosperity and wisdom. It begins on the fourth day (chaturthi) of the month of Bhadrapada (August–September)\, the sixth month of the Hindu calendar. \nAt the start of the festival\, idols of Ganesha are placed on raised platforms in homes or in elaborately decorated outdoor tents. The worship begins with the pranapratishtha\, a ritual to invoke life in the idols\, followed by shhodashopachara\, or the 16 ways of paying tribute. Amid the chanting of Vedic hymns from religious texts like the Ganesh Upanishad\, the idols are anointed with red sandalwood paste and yellow and red flowers. Ganesha is also offered coconut\, jaggery\, and 21 modaks (sweet dumplings)\, considered to be Ganesha’s favourite food. \nAt the conclusion of the festival\, the idols are carried to local rivers in huge processions accompanied by drumbeats\, devotional singing\, and dancing. There they are immersed\, a ritual symbolizing Ganesha’s homeward journey to Mount Kailas—the abode of his parents\, Shiva and Parvati. \nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/topic/Ganesh-Chaturthi

SUMMARY:First Parkash
DESCRIPTION:First Parkash (opening ceremony) of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib\, the main Sikh scripture\, is observed on September 1. The Granth\, or Adi Granth\, is a collection of prayers and hymns. The fifth Sikh guru\, Arjan Dev Ji\, compiled words and verses from all the Sikh Gurus and other saints to create the Granth. \nWhen Guru Arjan finished compiling the Granth’s 1\,430 pages and 5\,864 verses\, he placed it in the new Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar. He performed the first parkash there on 1 Bhadon Sudi\, Samvat 1661 (August 30\, 1604). The Adi Granth was a turning point for the Sikh faith\, marking its separation from Hinduism and Islam. \nSourced from https://theguibordcenter.org/faiths/sikhism/sikh-festivals-and-observances/

SUMMARY:Janmashtami
DESCRIPTION:Janmashtami\, Hindu festival celebrating the birth (janma) of the god Krishna on the eighth (ashtami) day of the dark fortnight of the month of Bhadrapada (August–September). The number eight has another significance in the Krishna legend in that he is the eighth child of his mother\, Devaki. \nThe occasion is observed especially in Mathura and Vrindavan (Brindaban)\, the scenes of Krishna’s childhood and early youth. On the preceding day\, devotees keep a vigil and fast until midnight\, the traditional hour of his birth. Then the image of Krishna is bathed in water and milk\, dressed in new clothes\, and worshipped. Temples and household shrines are decorated with leaves and flowers; sweetmeats are first offered to the god and then distributed as prasada (the god’s leftovers\, which carry his favour) to all the members of the household. The devotees of Krishna commemorate the events of his birth by preparing elaborate representations of Mathura\, where he was born\, the Yamuna River\, over which he was transported to safety\, and Gokul (ancient Vraja)\, the scene of his childhood\, using small images of the god\, the other participants\, and the animals and birds of the forest. Pots of milk are hung from tall poles in the streets\, and men form human pyramids to reach and break the pots—this in imitation of Krishna’s childhood play with the cowherd boys\, when they stole the curds hung out of reach by their mothers. The festival is also a time for group singing and dancing. \nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/topic/Janmashtami

SUMMARY:Muktad (Fravardeghan Days)
DESCRIPTION:Zoroastrians following the Shenshai calendar observe Muktad during the last 10 days of the religious year. During this time\, they believe\, the fravashis (spirits) of the righteous departed return to Earth. Believers welcome them with special rituals and offerings. \nFamilies dress in white and cover their heads before visiting the fire temple. Each day\, they pour fresh water into silver or copper vases\, where departed ancestors are thought to stay. The families offer roses and other flowers\, fruit\, and vegetarian food\, while priests recite prayers and burn incense. \nSourced from https://theguibordcenter.org/zoroastrian-holy-days-and-observances/

SUMMARY:Feast of the Transfiguration
DESCRIPTION:Transfiguration\, in the New Testament\, the occasion upon which Jesus Christ took three of his disciples\, Peter\, James\, and John\, up on a mountain\, where Moses and Elijah appeared and Jesus was transfigured\, his face and clothes becoming dazzlingly bright. The Transfiguration is recorded in all three of the Synoptic Gospels (Mark 9:2–13; Matthew 17:1–13; Luke 9:28–36) and is understood to have been the revelation of the eternal glory of the second person of the Trinity\, which was normally veiled during Christ’s life on earth. The event can also be interpreted as an anticipatory Resurrection appearance\, and the presence of the two prophets is often taken to signify Christ’s fulfillment of the Mosaic Law and the prophecies of the Hebrew Bible (the Christian Old Testament). The Feast of the Transfiguration is celebrated in the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches on August 6\, and the Transfiguration is ranked alongside Jesus’ baptism and the Crucifixion\, Resurrection\, and Ascension as a key milestone of his life and ministry. \nIn the Gospel accounts\, after foretelling his death and Resurrection\, Jesus and his three disciples went to “a high mountain” to be away from the crowds. There\, Jesus’ face began to shine like the sun and his clothes became miraculously white. As the disciples looked on\, Elijah and Moses suddenly appeared in glory and talked with the transfigured Jesus. Peter then offered to make three dwellings\, one for Jesus and one for each of the two supernatural guests\, but was interrupted by a voice from a bright cloud that said\, “This is my Son\, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!” (Matthew 17:5). Having collapsed in fear\, the disciples were comforted by Jesus\, who then urged them to keep silent about these events until after his Resurrection (Mark 9:9; Matthew 17:9). According to tradition\, the event took place on Mount Tabor. The Transfiguration is also referenced in the Second Letter of Peter\, where Peter’s presence as an eyewitness to Christ’s majesty is used to assure the readers that his message is true (1:16–18). \nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/topic/Transfiguration-Christianity

SUMMARY:Asalha Puja
DESCRIPTION:Asalha Puja Day\, also referred to as Dharma Day\, is one of the most important holy days for Buddhists. This day of celebration and new beginnings typically falls in July\, on the full moon of the eighth month of the lunar calendar. Asalha Puja Day commemorates the establishment of Buddhism. It represents the day that Buddha gave his first sermon as well as other foundational aspects; therefore\, this celebration is beloved among Buddhist people. \nBelievers hoping to share the gospel with their Buddhist friends should understand this significant holiday. \nWhat is Asalha Puja Day?\nBuddhism’s founder and leader\, Buddha\, was believed to be a wealthy prince before leaving his life of luxury to live a life of self-discipline and discovery. During the following six years\, it is believed that Buddha accomplished enlightenment on his own. According to Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard\, enlightenment is defined as\, “a state of perfect knowledge or wisdom\, combined with infinite compassion.” Following his enlightenment\, Buddha sought out five disciples to entrust his findings to. The sermon he preached to them is recognized as the beginning of Buddhism. \nAsalha Puja Day celebrates the first of Buddha’s teaching and the foundation of Buddhism. During his first sermon\, it is believed that Buddha shared four noble truths as well as the first Wheel of Dharma (dharma means truth or “path to enlightenment”)\, which are still honored in modern-day Buddhism. Buddhists believe these core teachings lead to a life of nirvana and enlightenment. Andrew Olendzki\, a professor at Lesley University\, defines Nirvana as “the highest state of profound well-being a human is capable of attaining. The mind awakens from delusion\, is liberated from bondage\, is cleansed of all its defilements\, becomes entirely at peace\, experiences the complete cessation of suffering\, and is no longer reborn.” Asalha Puja Day offers Buddhists a chance to show their appreciation to the Buddha for sharing his knowledge with them and other teachers. \nBuddhist monks play a large role in celebrating Asalha Puja Day. They recite the eight precepts\, teach sermons\, lead meditation\, perform chants\, and facilitate candle-lit precessions around their temples. Monks perform a chant of what is said to be Buddha’s first teaching. Asalha Puja Day also marks the start of a three-month mandatory retreat for monks. Buddhist people visit temples on this day to pray\, meditate\, listen to sermons\, and give offerings. This is a day of new beginnings\, renewal\, and recommitment to the faith for Buddhists. They reflect and try to focus on practicing dharma. \nSourced from https://blog.eastwest.org/what-is-asalha-puja-day

SUMMARY:Ashura
DESCRIPTION:Ashura marks the death anniversary of Hussain ibn Ali\, a 7th-century revolutionary leader who was killed in The Battle of Karbala. The Day of Ashura is recognized by millions across the world to remember Hussain’s dignified stand for social justice. \nHussain ibn Ali was the grandson of Muhammad (the last prophet of Islam)\, born in 620 AD. Hussain grew up with stories of compassion and dignity his grandfather displayed\, and as such became a leader who was known widely for his compassion\, wisdom\, and integrity. \nNot long after the death of Muhammad\, the Islamic Empire had fallen back into old habits. Hussain saw his grandfather’s teachings eroded by the caliph Yazid. Slowly the moral fabric of society began to decay as Yazid ruled with his own interests in mind. \nHussain was highly respected within society\, and his endorsement would carry great weight. Yazid needed a man like Hussain to follow his rule in order to provide legitimacy to his corrupt government. But Hussain was a man of morals and strived for social justice. Hussain could not sit and endorse Yazid and spoke out against him\, despite it being a risk to his life. \nHussain chose to make the ultimate stand for social justice. He chose to leave his hometown along with his family and a few companions. When word reached Yazid of Hussains stand\, he sent an army of 30\,000 to force Hussain to obey his rule. \nYazid knew full well that Hussain had a great amount of influence and that what started as a small stand with his family and companions could become a stand of tens of thousands of people. Thus\, Yazid gave Hussain an ultimatum. Either obey him or die. \nHussain did not want any violence and did not want anyone to die\, however\, he knew he could not sit and obey Yazid\, so he chose instead to stick to his principles. Having refused to obey him\, Yazid ordered his men to kill Hussain on the 10th day of the first month of the Islamic calendar (Muharram). This day is known as The Day of Ashura. \nThe Day of Ashura is mourned and remembered by millions of people across the world as the day Hussain and his supporters were killed in The Battle of Karbala. Today\, pilgrims from all across the world visit the shrine of Hussain ibn Ali in Karbala where he is buried\, to pay their tribute to his courageous stand. \nOn the day of Ashura many Muslims partake in large peaceful gatherings where they recite poems in memory of Hussain and his sacrifice whilst lamenting and beating their chest as a cultural tradition to display their grievance. Many people use the day of Ashura as a day to perform acts of kindness and charity as a way for them to keep alive the very same principles and values Hussain gave his life for. \nSourced from https://whoishussain.org/who-is-hussain/the-day-of-ashura

SUMMARY:Islamic New Year
DESCRIPTION:The Islamic New Year takes place during the first month of the Hijrī\, or Muslim lunar calendar. Though majority-Islamic countries are governed by the solar Gregorian calendar\, the lunar calendar is used to calculate the dates of religious feasts and important observances such as the Hajj pilgrimage. Because the Hijrī relies on the movements of the moon\, the Muslim calendar has just 354 or 355 days\, making it about 11 days shorter than the solar Gregorian calendar with 365 days (366 in leap years).Umar I\, the second Muslim caliph\, instituted the calendar in 639 C.E. as part of a broader attempt to standardize and organize Islamic life and traditions—and possibly so the calendar would stand apart from those used by other religions. \nUmar set the beginning of the calendar on an important anniversary: the summer in 622 C.E. during which the Prophet Muhammad and his followers are said to have migrated in secret from Mecca\, the city in Saudi Arabia where the prophet was born\, to Medina. That migration\, also known as Hijrah\, was an attempt to escape religious persecution\, and the date is widely seen as the beginning of Islam both as an organized religion and political institution. \nThough the Hijrī calendar has a distinct starting point\, the days and times its months begin can vary by region because it relies on the first sighting of the new crescent moon. \nSourced from https://www.nationalgeographic.com/history/article/what-is-the-islamic-new-year-and-how-is-it-celebrated?loggedin=true&rnd=1684965529446

SUMMARY:Maidyoi-shema
DESCRIPTION:Believers observe the midsummer festival of Maidyoi-shema on days 101 to 105 of the year\, typically June 29 to July 3. It celebrates the creation of water\, the spring harvest’s end\, and the start of the summer harvest. \nZoroastrians observe six seasonal festivals (Gahambar) that celebrate the sanctity of God’s universal creations. Each Gahambar lasts five days and honors the five material creations: earth\, water\, plants\, animals and humans. SUMMARY:Eid al Adha 2024
DESCRIPTION:Eid al-Adha\, (Arabic: “Festival of Sacrifice”) also spelled ʿĪd al-Aḍḥā\, also called ʿĪd al-Qurbān or al-ʿĪd al-Kabīr (“Major Festival”)\, Turkish Kurban Bayram\, the second of two great Muslim festivals\, the other being Eid al-Fitr. Eid al-Adha marks the culmination of the hajj (pilgrimage) rites at Minā\, Saudi Arabia\, near Mecca\, but is celebrated by Muslims throughout the world. As with Eid al-Fitr\, it is distinguished by the performance of communal prayer (ṣalāt) at daybreak on its first day. It begins on the 10th of Dhū al-Ḥijjah\, the last month of the Islamic calendar\, and continues for an additional three days (though the Muslim use of a lunar calendar means that it may occur during any season of the year). During the festival\, families that can afford to sacrifice a ritually acceptable animal (sheep\, goat\, camel\, or cow) do so and then divide the flesh equally among themselves\, the poor\, and friends and neighbours. Eid al-Adha is also a time for visiting with friends and family and for exchanging gifts. This festival commemorates the ransom with a ram of the biblical patriarch Ibrāhīm’s (Abraham’s) son Ismāʿīl (Ishmael)—rather than Isaac\, as in Judeo-Christian tradition.
