SUMMARY:Maghi
DESCRIPTION:Sikhs and Hindus\, especially in India’s Punjab region\, both observe the first day of the month of Magh. In Sikhism\, Maghi honors the martyred Chali Mukte (40 Liberated Ones)\, killed as they resisted an attack on Guru Gobind Singh. The battle took place on 30 Poh (December 29)\, 1705 in Muktsar\, Punjab. The fallen were cremated the next day\, 1 Magh\, which generally falls on January 14 or 15. Hindus across India and Nepal celebrate the event as a harvest festival\, known by Makar Sankranti\, Pongal\, Uttarayan\, and other names. \nMaghi customs include recitals of the entire Guru Granth Sahib\, bathing in holy water\, charitable giving\, and eating kheer (sweet rice porridge). The largest celebration takes place over three days in Muktsar. Believers bathe in the Sarovar (sacred pool) and visit shrines associated with the battle. On the third day\, they walk together from the main shrine to the Tibbi Sahib gurdwara\, sacred to Guru Gobind. \nSourced from https://theguibordcenter.org/faiths/sikhism/sikh-festivals-and-observances/

SUMMARY:Indian Self-Determination Act of 1975
DESCRIPTION:Indian Self-Determination is the ability for tribal communities to shape their own destinies\, unencumbered by external forces which may undermine their authority. \nIn the years following the disastrous policy of Termination\, the United States federal government began shifting its energies towards investing in tribal autonomy as a way of managing Indian affairs. Beginning formally with a 1961 Commission on the Rights\, Liberties\, and Responsibilities of the American Indian concluding that top-down initiatives lacking cooperation with tribal community members are destined for failure\, officials in Washington began realizing how fraught a paternalistic approach to Indian policy is. What evolved from this 1961 commission\, and the American Indian Chicago Conference later that year in June\, which brought together 450 tribal delegates from 90 nations\, was a decade of growing support for Indian self-determination. \nBy the middle of the 1960’s\, Indian self-determination found growing favor in Washington D.C. from officials such as Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall. Between 1961 and 1975\, the policy of termination was halted completely as self-determination showed far greater promise in meeting the needs of tribal communities suffering from years of federal intervention. On January 4th\, 1975\, the Indian Self-Determination Act was passed\, the culmination of years of activism\, policy work\, and careful collaboration among communities across Indian Country. \nSourced from https://www.potawatomiheritage.com/encyclopedia/indian-self-determination-act

SUMMARY:World Braille Day
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, we work to get Braille into the hands of more blind people. January 4 marks World Braille Day in celebration of its creator\, Louis Braille. Every day\, thousands of blind people use Braille for everything from shopping lists to labels for canned goods\, from reading novels to solving math and scientific equations\, from learning a piece of music to composing one. The increasing availability of Braille signs makes it easier for blind people to get around hotels\, office buildings\, government facilities\, university campuses\, and more. Braille is as flexible as print\, can be learned in roughly the same amount of time\, and can be read just as fluidly. \nSourced from https://nfb.org/celebrate-world-braille-day

SUMMARY:Feast Day of St. Basil
DESCRIPTION:Saint Basil the Great\, (born AD 329\, Caesarea Mazaca\, Cappadocia—died Jan. 1\, 379\, Caesarea; Western feast day January 2; Eastern feast day January 1)\, Early church father. Born into a Christian family in Cappadocia\, he studied at Caesarea\, Constantinople\, and Athens and later established a monastic settlement on the family estate at Annesi. He opposed Arianism\, which was supported by the emperor Valens and his own bishop Dianius\, and organized resistance to it after 365. He succeeded Eusebius as bishop of Caesarea in 370. He died shortly after Valens\, whose death in battle opened the way for the victory of Basil’s cause. More than 300 of his letters survive; several of his Canonical Epistles have become part of canon law in Eastern Orthodoxy. \n\n\n\n\nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/biography/Saint-Basil-the-Great

SUMMARY:Maidyarem
DESCRIPTION:The midwinter festival of Maidyarem celebrates the evolution of animals. The fifth Gahambar falls on days 286 through 290\, typically December 31 to January 4. \nZoroastrians observe six seasonal festivals that celebrate the sanctity of God’s universal creations. Each Gahambar lasts five days and honors the five material creations: earth\, water\, plants\, animals and humans. Believers spend the first four days reciting scriptures and come together on the last day for a feast. \nSourced from https://theguibordcenter.org/zoroastrian-holy-days-and-observances/

SUMMARY:Wounded Knee Massacre (Day of Reflection)
DESCRIPTION:Wounded Knee Massacre\, (December 29\, 1890)\, the slaughter of approximately 150–300 Lakota Indians by United States Army troops in the area of Wounded Knee Creek in southwestern South Dakota. The massacre was the climax of the U.S. Army’s late 19th-century efforts to repress the Plains Indians. It broke any organized resistance to reservation life and assimilation to white American culture\, although American Indian activists renewed public attention to the massacre during a 1973 occupation of the site. \n\n\nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/event/Wounded-Knee-Massacre

SUMMARY:Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Christmas\, Christian festival celebrating the birth of Jesus. The English term Christmas (“mass on Christ’s day”) is of fairly recent origin. The earlier term Yule may have derived from the Germanic jōl or the Anglo-Saxon geōl\, which referred to the feast of the winter solstice. The corresponding terms in other languages—Navidad in Spanish\, Natale in Italian\, Noël in French—all probably denote nativity. The German word Weihnachten denotes “hallowed night.” Since the early 20th century\, Christmas has also been a secular family holiday\, observed by Christians and non-Christians alike\, devoid of Christian elements\, and marked by an increasingly elaborate exchange of gifts. In this secular Christmas celebration\, a mythical figure named Santa Claus plays the pivotal role. \n\n\nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/topic/Christmas

SUMMARY:Winter Solstice
DESCRIPTION:Winter solstice\, the two moments during the year when the path of the Sun in the sky is farthest south in the Northern Hemisphere (December 21 or 22) and farthest north in the Southern Hemisphere (June 20 or 21). At the winter solstice the Sun travels the shortest path through the sky\, and that day therefore has the least daylight and the longest night. (See also solstice.) \nWhen the winter solstice happens in the Northern Hemisphere\, the North Pole is tilted about 23.4° (23°27′) away from the Sun. Because the Sun’s rays are shifted southward from the Equator by the same amount\, the vertical noon rays are directly overhead at the Tropic of Capricorn (23°27′ S). Six months later the South Pole is inclined about 23.4° away from the Sun. On this day of the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere\, the Sun’s vertical overhead rays progress to their northernmost position\, the Tropic of Cancer (23°27′ N). \n\nAccording to the astronomical definition of the seasons\, the winter solstice also marks the beginning of the season of winter\, which lasts until the vernal equinox (March 20 or 21 in the Northern Hemisphere\, or September 22 or 23 in the Southern Hemisphere). After the solstice\, the days get longer\, and the day has thus been celebrated in many cultures as a time of rebirth. \nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/science/winter-solstice

SUMMARY:Bodhi Day (Rohatsu)
DESCRIPTION:Bodhi Day is being observed by Buddhists worldwide. \nThe word “bodhi” originates from a verb that means “to awaken” or “awakened” in Pali and Sanskrit\, two ancient Indian languages. It is commonly considered to indicate “enlightenment” in Buddhism. \n\n\n\n\nBodhi Day honours the moment 2\,600 years ago when Siddhartha Gautama became enlightened\, or awakened\, to become the Buddha. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSourced from https://www.standard.co.uk/news/world/bodhi-day-why-buddhists-celebrate-japan-b1125808.html

SUMMARY:Advent 2024
DESCRIPTION:Advent\, (from Latin adventus\, “coming”)\, in the Christian church calendar\, the period of preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas and also of preparation for the Second Coming of Christ. In Western churches\, Advent begins on the Sunday nearest to November 30 (St. Andrew’s Day) and is the beginning of the liturgical year. In many Eastern churches\, the Nativity Fast is a similar period of penance and preparation that occurs during the 40 days before Christmas. The date when the season was first observed is uncertain. Bishop Perpetuus of Tours (461–490) established a fast before Christmas that began on November 11 (St. Martin’s Day)\, and the Council of Tours (567) mentioned an Advent season. \nThe liturgical meaning of the Advent season referred to the dual “coming” of Jesus—then Roman Catholicism the traditional liturgical colour for Advent is violet; many Protestant denominations have adopted blue or purple. The third Sunday of Advent\, known as Gaudete Sunday\, is commonly marked by the use of rose-coloured vestments and candles. \nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/topic/Advent

SUMMARY:The Day of the Covenant
DESCRIPTION:The Day of the Covenant is a Baha’i holy day honoring the Covenant of Baha’u’llah and\, in particular\, ‘Abdu’l-Baha (1844–1921) as the “Centre of the Covenant.” …the Covenant established by Baha’u’llah protects the Baha’i religion from schism. In anticipation of his eventual passing\, Baha’u’llah called on all Baha’is to turn to ‘Abdu’l-Baha (Baha’u’llah’s eldest son) as successor (inerrant leader of the Baha’i community)\, interpreter (authorized exponent of Baha’u’llah’s teachings)\, and exemplar (perfect embodiment of Baha’i virtues and morality). This triple function has been as powerful in its influence on the future course and fortunes of the Baha’i community as ‘Abdu’l-Baha’s station is conceptually and functionally distinctive\, and remains so. \nSourced from https://www.bahai.us/day-of-the-covenant

SUMMARY:Transgender Day of Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester\, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death\, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. \n“Transgender Day of Remembrance seeks to highlight the losses we face due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. I am no stranger to the need to fight for our rights\, and the right to simply exist is first and foremost. With so many seeking to erase transgender people — sometimes in the most brutal ways possible — it is vitally important that those we lose are remembered\, and that we continue to fight for justice.” – Transgender Day of Remembrance founder Gwendolyn Ann Smith \nhttps://www.glaad.org/tdor

SUMMARY:Remembrance/Veteran's Day
DESCRIPTION:World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” – officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28\, 1919\, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles\, France. However\, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice\, or temporary cessation of hostilities\, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason\, November 11\, 1918\, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.” \nVeterans Day continues to be observed on November 11\, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. The restoration of the observance of Veterans Day to November 11 not only preserves the historical significance of the date\, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism\, love of country\, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. \nSourced from https://department.va.gov/veterans-day/history-of-veterans-day

SUMMARY:National Stress Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:National Stress Awareness Day aims to identify and reduce the stress factors in your life.  Everyone has stress. Some stress is good for us. It helps us to respond to changes in life. Stress is our body’s way protecting itself from harm. However\, too much stress causes harm to our health and relationships. Identifying the stressors impacting our physical and mental health is important. Sometimes\, health problems are the cause. But our health can also be affected by external stressors such as physical abuse\, stressful work environments\, financial stress\, or other family health issues. Once we identify the causes of stress in our lives\, we can begin to eliminate or reduce the stress.

SUMMARY:Guru Gaddi
DESCRIPTION:Guru Gobind Singh\, the tenth Sikh Guru\, installed the Siri Guru Granth Sahib as Guru October 20\, 1706. This day is celebrated today as “Guru Gaddi Day” each year. This is often celebrated with special Kirtan programs\, Akhand Paths (continuous reading of the full Siri Guru Granth Sahib) and Sikh parades. \nAt the time of His death in 1708\, Guru Gobind Singh Ji passed the mantle of the Guruship to the Siri Guru Granth Sahib. This ended the time of the physical Gurus of the Sikhs. Guru Gobind Singh Ji declared that the Word of God\, embodied in the Siri Guru Granth Sahib\, was to be Guru for the Sikhs for all time. He said: \n“O Beloved Khalsa\, let any who desire to behold me\, behold the Guru Granth. Obey the Granth Sahib\, for it is the visible body of the Guru. Let any who desire to meet me\, diligently search its Bani.” \nThe Siri Guru Granth Sahib remains the Spiritual Light and Guide for the Sikh community today. \nSourced from https://www.sikhdharma.org/topics/guru-gaddi-day-2

SUMMARY:Daylight Saving Time ends 2024
DESCRIPTION:Daylight Saving Time ends on the first Sunday in November 3rd at 2:00 AM. \nThe practice of Daylight saving time (DST) (also known as summer time) advances clocks during summer months. It causes us to lose an hour for one day. However\, the practice allows people to get up earlier in the morning and experience more daylight in the evening. Typically\, users of DST adjust clocks forward one hour near the start of spring. Then\, they change them back again in the autumn.

SUMMARY:National Native American Heritage Month
DESCRIPTION:What started at the turn of the century as an effort to gain a day of recognition for the significant contributions the first Americans made to the establishment and growth of the U.S.\, has resulted in a whole month being designated for that purpose. \nOne of the very proponents of an American Indian Day was Dr. Arthur C. Parker\, a Seneca Indian\, who was the director of the Museum of Arts and Science in Rochester\, N.Y. He persuaded the Boy Scouts of America to set aside a day for the “First Americans” and for three years they adopted such a day. In 1915\, the annual Congress of the American Indian Association meeting in Lawrence\, Kans.\, formally approved a plan concerning American Indian Day. It directed its president\, Rev. Sherman Coolidge\, an Arapahoe\, to call upon the country to observe such a day. Coolidge issued a proclamation on Sept. 28\, 1915\, which declared the second Saturday of each May as an American Indian Day and contained the first formal appeal for recognition of Indians as citizens. \nThe year before this proclamation was issued\, Red Fox James\, a Blackfoot Indian\, rode horseback from state to state seeking approval for a day to honor Indians. On December 14\, 1915\, he presented the endorsements of 24 state governments at the White House. There is no record\, however\, of such a national day being proclaimed. \nThe first American Indian Day in a state was declared on the second Saturday in May 1916 by the governor of New York. Several states celebrate the fourth Friday in September. In Illinois\, for example\, legislators enacted such a day in 1919. Presently\, several states have designated Columbus Day as Native American Day\, but it continues to be a day we observe without any recognition as a national legal holiday. \nIn 1990 President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 “National American Indian Heritage Month.” Similar proclamations\, under variants on the name (including “Native American Heritage Month” and “National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month”) have been issued each year since 1994. \nRetrieved from https://nativeamericanheritagemonth.gov/about

SUMMARY:National Epilepsy Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month. According to the Epilepsy Foundation\, 1 in 10 people will experience a seizure throughout their life\, and 1 in 26 will develop epilepsy.\n\n\n\nEpilepsy can affect anyone with a brain. According to the World Health Organization\, epilepsy is the most common serious brain disorder worldwide with no age\, racial\, social class\, national or geographic boundaries.\nPublic misunderstanding about epilepsy causes social challenges like bullying\, discrimination\, and depression. People don’t want to talk about it\, but we can no longer ignore it.\n\nOver a lifetime\, one in 10 people will have a seizure\, and one in 26 will be diagnosed with epilepsy. There are 3.4 million people in the U.S. living with active epilepsy – that’s more than Autism Spectrum Disorders\, Parkinson’s\, Multiple Sclerosis and Cerebral Palsy combined. Yet\, Epilepsy receives one-tenth the research funding than any one of those neurological disorders. \nSourced from https://www.epilepsy.com/make-difference/public-awareness/national-epilepsy-awareness-month/2018-national-epilepsy-awareness

SUMMARY:Diwali 2024
DESCRIPTION:Diwali is the five-day festival of lights\, celebrated by millions of Hindus\, Sikhs and Jains across the world. Diwali\, which for some also coincides with harvest and new year celebrations\, is a festival of new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil\, and light over darkness. \nThe festival is usually some time between October and November\, with the date changing each year. The word Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word deepavali\, meaning “rows of lighted lamps”. Houses\, shops and public places are decorated with small oil lamps called diyas. People also enjoy fireworks and sweets too\, so it’s really popular with children. \nEach religion marks different historical events and stories. \nHindus celebrate the return of deities Rama and Sita to Ayodhya after their 14-year exile. They also celebrate the day Mother Goddess Durga destroyed a demon called Mahisha. \nSikhs particularly celebrate the release from prison of the sixth guru Hargobind Singh in 1619. But Sikhs celebrated the festival before this date. In fact\, the foundation stone of the Golden Temple at Amritsar\, the most holy place in the Sikh world\, was laid on Diwali in 1577. The founder of Jainism is Lord Mahavira. During Diwali\, Jains celebrate the moment he reached a state called Moksha (nirvana\, or eternal bliss). \nSourced from https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/15451833

SUMMARY:All Saints’ Day
DESCRIPTION:All Saints’ Day\, in the Christian church\, a day commemorating all the saints of the church\, both known and unknown\, who have attained heaven. It is celebrated on November 1 in the Western churches and on the first Sunday after Pentecost in the Eastern churches. In Roman Catholicism\, the feast is usually a holy day of obligation. It is part of the three-day triduum dedicated to remembering the dead\, beginning with Halloween (October 31) and followed by All Saints’ Day (November 1) and All Souls’ Day (November 2). \nThe origin of All Saints’ Day cannot be traced with certainty\, and it has been observed on various days in different places. A feast of all martyrs was kept on May 13 in the Eastern church according to Ephraem Syrus (died c. 373)\, which may have determined the choice of May 13 by Pope Boniface IV when he dedicated the Pantheon in Rome as a church in honour of the Blessed Virgin and all martyrs in 609. The first evidence for the November 1 date of celebration and of the broadening of the festival to include all saints as well as all martyrs occurred during the reign of Pope Gregory III (731–741)\, who dedicated a chapel in St. Peter’s\, Rome\, on November 1 in honour of all saints. In 800 All Saints’ Day was kept by Alcuin on November 1\, and it also appeared in a 9th-century English calendar on that day. In 837 Pope Gregory IV ordered its general observance. In medieval England the festival was known as All Hallows\, and its eve is still known as Halloween. The period from October 31 to November 2 (All Souls’ Day) is sometimes known as Allhallowtide. \nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/topic/All-Saints-Day

SUMMARY:National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:Back in November 1983\, President Ronald Reagan designated November as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month.  At the time\, fewer than 2 million Americans had Alzheimer’s; today\, the number of people with the disease has soared to nearly 5.4 million. \nDuring November\, National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness month aims at making the general public more aware of the disease and the scale of it among the U.S. population\, as well as bring new light potential care options for those affected. \nDementia impacts the whole family\, not just the person with the disease. The chronic stress of watching a loved one slowly decline affects everyone. Family caregivers experience high rates of physical illness\, social isolation\, emotional distress and financial hardship compared to non-caregivers. Having a care plan can help reduce stress by knowing what to expect and having resources at hand. \nSourced from https://www.alzheimersla.org/awareness-month
