DESCRIPTION:International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women raises awareness regarding an ongoing human rights issue. Today\, many women around the world are still subject to rape and other types of violence.\nThrough the years\, government officials and international leaders have lead the charge to curb violence against women and girls. Unfortunately\, however\, it is still all too common. Violence against women continues to be a widespread and persistent human rights violation.

SUMMARY:The Day of the Covenant
DESCRIPTION:The Day of the Covenant is a Baha’i holy day honoring the Covenant of Baha’u’llah and\, in particular\, ‘Abdu’l-Baha (1844–1921) as the “Centre of the Covenant.” …the Covenant established by Baha’u’llah protects the Baha’i religion from schism. In anticipation of his eventual passing\, Baha’u’llah called on all Baha’is to turn to ‘Abdu’l-Baha (Baha’u’llah’s eldest son) as successor (inerrant leader of the Baha’i community)\, interpreter (authorized exponent of Baha’u’llah’s teachings)\, and exemplar (perfect embodiment of Baha’i virtues and morality). This triple function has been as powerful in its influence on the future course and fortunes of the Baha’i community as ‘Abdu’l-Baha’s station is conceptually and functionally distinctive\, and remains so. \nSourced from https://www.bahai.us/day-of-the-covenant

SUMMARY:Transgender Day of Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester\, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death\, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. \n“Transgender Day of Remembrance seeks to highlight the losses we face due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. I am no stranger to the need to fight for our rights\, and the right to simply exist is first and foremost. With so many seeking to erase transgender people — sometimes in the most brutal ways possible — it is vitally important that those we lose are remembered\, and that we continue to fight for justice.” – Transgender Day of Remembrance founder Gwendolyn Ann Smith \nhttps://www.glaad.org/tdor

SUMMARY:Guru Nanak Jayanti
DESCRIPTION:This day celebrates the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji\, founder and first Guru of Sikhism. It is considered one of the most important Sikh holy days. Most Sikhs have traditionally celebrated Guru Nanak Jayanti in November\, following the Nanakshahi calendar\, However\, some scholars believe it should be celebrated on Baisakhi Day\, usually falling in April. (The Guru was born on Baisakhi Day\, April 5\, 1469\, in what is now Punjab Province\, Pakistan. \nTwo days before the festival\, events begin that include Akhand Paath\, a 48-hour reading of the Guru Granth Sahib at gurdwaras (temples). The next day\, Sikhs visit the gurdwara to chant hymns and hold Nagar Kirtan. On the festival day\, celebrations include readings\, music\, and assemblies. At langars\, or community kitchens\, volunteers serve food and a special sweet called karah prashad. \nSourced from https://theguibordcenter.org/faiths/sikhism/sikh-festivals-and-observances/

SUMMARY:World Diabetes Day
DESCRIPTION:World Diabetes Day (WDD) was created in 1991 by IDF and the World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes. World Diabetes Day became an official United Nations Day in 2006 with the passage of United Nation Resolution 61/225. It is marked every year on 14 November\, the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting\, who co-discovered insulin along with Charles Best in 1922.\nWDD is the world’s largest diabetes awareness campaign reaching a global audience of over 1 billion people in more than 160 countries. The campaign draws attention to issues of paramount importance to the diabetes world and keeps diabetes firmly in the public and political spotlight.\nThe World Diabetes Day campaign aims to be the: \n\nPlatform to promote IDF advocacy efforts throughout the year.\nGlobal driver to promote the importance of taking coordinated and concerted actions to confront diabetes as a critical global health issue\n\nEvery year\, the World Diabetes Day campaign focuses on a dedicated theme that runs for one or more years. The theme for World Diabetes Day 2020 is The Nurse and Diabetes. Messaging and materials will start to be made available during the second quarter of 2020. \nhttps://worlddiabetesday.org/about/

SUMMARY:Remembrance/Veteran's Day
DESCRIPTION:World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” – officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28\, 1919\, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles\, France. However\, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice\, or temporary cessation of hostilities\, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason\, November 11\, 1918\, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.” \nVeterans Day continues to be observed on November 11\, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. The restoration of the observance of Veterans Day to November 11 not only preserves the historical significance of the date\, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism\, love of country\, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. \nSourced from https://department.va.gov/veterans-day/history-of-veterans-day

SUMMARY:National Stress Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:National Stress Awareness Day aims to identify and reduce the stress factors in your life.  Everyone has stress. Some stress is good for us. It helps us to respond to changes in life. Stress is our body’s way protecting itself from harm. However\, too much stress causes harm to our health and relationships. Identifying the stressors impacting our physical and mental health is important. Sometimes\, health problems are the cause. But our health can also be affected by external stressors such as physical abuse\, stressful work environments\, financial stress\, or other family health issues. Once we identify the causes of stress in our lives\, we can begin to eliminate or reduce the stress.

SUMMARY:Guru Gaddi
DESCRIPTION:Guru Gobind Singh\, the tenth Sikh Guru\, installed the Siri Guru Granth Sahib as Guru October 20\, 1706. This day is celebrated today as “Guru Gaddi Day” each year. This is often celebrated with special Kirtan programs\, Akhand Paths (continuous reading of the full Siri Guru Granth Sahib) and Sikh parades. \nAt the time of His death in 1708\, Guru Gobind Singh Ji passed the mantle of the Guruship to the Siri Guru Granth Sahib. This ended the time of the physical Gurus of the Sikhs. Guru Gobind Singh Ji declared that the Word of God\, embodied in the Siri Guru Granth Sahib\, was to be Guru for the Sikhs for all time. He said: \n“O Beloved Khalsa\, let any who desire to behold me\, behold the Guru Granth. Obey the Granth Sahib\, for it is the visible body of the Guru. Let any who desire to meet me\, diligently search its Bani.” \nThe Siri Guru Granth Sahib remains the Spiritual Light and Guide for the Sikh community today. \nSourced from https://www.sikhdharma.org/topics/guru-gaddi-day-2

SUMMARY:Daylight Saving Time ends 2024
DESCRIPTION:Daylight Saving Time ends on the first Sunday in November 3rd at 2:00 AM. \nThe practice of Daylight saving time (DST) (also known as summer time) advances clocks during summer months. It causes us to lose an hour for one day. However\, the practice allows people to get up earlier in the morning and experience more daylight in the evening. Typically\, users of DST adjust clocks forward one hour near the start of spring. Then\, they change them back again in the autumn.

SUMMARY:National Native American Heritage Month
DESCRIPTION:What started at the turn of the century as an effort to gain a day of recognition for the significant contributions the first Americans made to the establishment and growth of the U.S.\, has resulted in a whole month being designated for that purpose. \nOne of the very proponents of an American Indian Day was Dr. Arthur C. Parker\, a Seneca Indian\, who was the director of the Museum of Arts and Science in Rochester\, N.Y. He persuaded the Boy Scouts of America to set aside a day for the “First Americans” and for three years they adopted such a day. In 1915\, the annual Congress of the American Indian Association meeting in Lawrence\, Kans.\, formally approved a plan concerning American Indian Day. It directed its president\, Rev. Sherman Coolidge\, an Arapahoe\, to call upon the country to observe such a day. Coolidge issued a proclamation on Sept. 28\, 1915\, which declared the second Saturday of each May as an American Indian Day and contained the first formal appeal for recognition of Indians as citizens. \nThe year before this proclamation was issued\, Red Fox James\, a Blackfoot Indian\, rode horseback from state to state seeking approval for a day to honor Indians. On December 14\, 1915\, he presented the endorsements of 24 state governments at the White House. There is no record\, however\, of such a national day being proclaimed. \nThe first American Indian Day in a state was declared on the second Saturday in May 1916 by the governor of New York. Several states celebrate the fourth Friday in September. In Illinois\, for example\, legislators enacted such a day in 1919. Presently\, several states have designated Columbus Day as Native American Day\, but it continues to be a day we observe without any recognition as a national legal holiday. \nIn 1990 President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 “National American Indian Heritage Month.” Similar proclamations\, under variants on the name (including “Native American Heritage Month” and “National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month”) have been issued each year since 1994. \nRetrieved from https://nativeamericanheritagemonth.gov/about

SUMMARY:National Epilepsy Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month. According to the Epilepsy Foundation\, 1 in 10 people will experience a seizure throughout their life\, and 1 in 26 will develop epilepsy.\n\n\n\nEpilepsy can affect anyone with a brain. According to the World Health Organization\, epilepsy is the most common serious brain disorder worldwide with no age\, racial\, social class\, national or geographic boundaries.\nPublic misunderstanding about epilepsy causes social challenges like bullying\, discrimination\, and depression. People don’t want to talk about it\, but we can no longer ignore it.\n\nOver a lifetime\, one in 10 people will have a seizure\, and one in 26 will be diagnosed with epilepsy. There are 3.4 million people in the U.S. living with active epilepsy – that’s more than Autism Spectrum Disorders\, Parkinson’s\, Multiple Sclerosis and Cerebral Palsy combined. Yet\, Epilepsy receives one-tenth the research funding than any one of those neurological disorders. \nSourced from https://www.epilepsy.com/make-difference/public-awareness/national-epilepsy-awareness-month/2018-national-epilepsy-awareness

SUMMARY:Diwali 2024
DESCRIPTION:Diwali is the five-day festival of lights\, celebrated by millions of Hindus\, Sikhs and Jains across the world. Diwali\, which for some also coincides with harvest and new year celebrations\, is a festival of new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil\, and light over darkness. \nThe festival is usually some time between October and November\, with the date changing each year. The word Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word deepavali\, meaning “rows of lighted lamps”. Houses\, shops and public places are decorated with small oil lamps called diyas. People also enjoy fireworks and sweets too\, so it’s really popular with children. \nEach religion marks different historical events and stories. \nHindus celebrate the return of deities Rama and Sita to Ayodhya after their 14-year exile. They also celebrate the day Mother Goddess Durga destroyed a demon called Mahisha. \nSikhs particularly celebrate the release from prison of the sixth guru Hargobind Singh in 1619. But Sikhs celebrated the festival before this date. In fact\, the foundation stone of the Golden Temple at Amritsar\, the most holy place in the Sikh world\, was laid on Diwali in 1577. The founder of Jainism is Lord Mahavira. During Diwali\, Jains celebrate the moment he reached a state called Moksha (nirvana\, or eternal bliss). \nSourced from https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/15451833

SUMMARY:All Saints’ Day
DESCRIPTION:All Saints’ Day\, in the Christian church\, a day commemorating all the saints of the church\, both known and unknown\, who have attained heaven. It is celebrated on November 1 in the Western churches and on the first Sunday after Pentecost in the Eastern churches. In Roman Catholicism\, the feast is usually a holy day of obligation. It is part of the three-day triduum dedicated to remembering the dead\, beginning with Halloween (October 31) and followed by All Saints’ Day (November 1) and All Souls’ Day (November 2). \nThe origin of All Saints’ Day cannot be traced with certainty\, and it has been observed on various days in different places. A feast of all martyrs was kept on May 13 in the Eastern church according to Ephraem Syrus (died c. 373)\, which may have determined the choice of May 13 by Pope Boniface IV when he dedicated the Pantheon in Rome as a church in honour of the Blessed Virgin and all martyrs in 609. The first evidence for the November 1 date of celebration and of the broadening of the festival to include all saints as well as all martyrs occurred during the reign of Pope Gregory III (731–741)\, who dedicated a chapel in St. Peter’s\, Rome\, on November 1 in honour of all saints. In 800 All Saints’ Day was kept by Alcuin on November 1\, and it also appeared in a 9th-century English calendar on that day. In 837 Pope Gregory IV ordered its general observance. In medieval England the festival was known as All Hallows\, and its eve is still known as Halloween. The period from October 31 to November 2 (All Souls’ Day) is sometimes known as Allhallowtide. \nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/topic/All-Saints-Day

DESCRIPTION:Back in November 1983\, President Ronald Reagan designated November as National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month.  At the time\, fewer than 2 million Americans had Alzheimer’s; today\, the number of people with the disease has soared to nearly 5.4 million. \nDuring November\, National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness month aims at making the general public more aware of the disease and the scale of it among the U.S. population\, as well as bring new light potential care options for those affected. \nDementia impacts the whole family\, not just the person with the disease. The chronic stress of watching a loved one slowly decline affects everyone. Family caregivers experience high rates of physical illness\, social isolation\, emotional distress and financial hardship compared to non-caregivers. Having a care plan can help reduce stress by knowing what to expect and having resources at hand. \nSourced from https://www.alzheimersla.org/awareness-month

SUMMARY:Samhain
DESCRIPTION:Samhain (a Gaelic word pronounced “sow-win”) is a pagan religious festival originating from an ancient Celtic spiritual tradition. It is usually celebrated from October 31 to November 1 to welcome in the harvest and usher in “the dark half of the year.” Celebrants believe that the barriers between the physical world and the spirit world break down during Samhain\, allowing more interaction between humans and denizens of the Otherworld. \n\n\n\nSourced from https://www.history.com/topics/holidays/samhain

SUMMARY:Shemini Atzeret 2024
DESCRIPTION:Shemini Atzeret\, (Hebrew: “Eighth Day of the Solemn Assembly”)\, a Jewish religious festival on the eighth day of Sukkoth (Feast of Booths)\, considered by some to be an independent celebration immediately following Sukkoth. In Old Testament times a distinction was made regarding sacrifices: whereas 70 sacrifices were offered on the first seven days of Sukkoth to signify the “70 nations” constituting all humanity\, a single ram and a single bullock were sacrificed on the eighth day to symbolize Israel’s special relationship to God. In Israel\, Simchat Torah is also celebrated on the eighth day of Sukkoth\, although in other countries it is celebrated on the ninth day. \nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/topic/Shemini-Atzeret

SUMMARY:International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
DESCRIPTION:The observance of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty can be traced back to 17 October 1987. On that day\, over a hundred thousand people gathered at the Trocadéro in Paris\, where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948\, to honour the victims of extreme poverty\, violence and hunger. They proclaimed that poverty is a violation of human rights and affirmed the need to come together to ensure that these rights are respected. Since then\, people of all backgrounds\, beliefs and social origins have gathered every year on October 17th to renew their commitment and show their solidarity with the poor. \nThrough resolution 47/196 adopted on 22 December 1992\, the UN General Assembly declared 17 October as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. \nSourced from https://www.unesco.org/en/days/poverty-eradication

SUMMARY:Twin Holy Birthdays
DESCRIPTION:The Festivals of the Twin Birthdays or the Twin Holy Birthdays refers to two successive holy days in the Bahaʼi calendar that celebrate the births of two central figures of the Bahaʼi Faith. \nMirza Husayn-‘Ali\, later known as Baha’u’llah\, “the Glory of God\,” was born in 1817 in Tehran\, the capital of Persia\, now called Iran. \nTwo years later\, in 1819\, Siyyid ‘Ali-Muhammad was born in Shiraz\, a city in southern Persia. He later took the title\, the Bab\, meaning “the Gate.” \nThe Bab and Bahaʼu’llah are revered as central figures of the Bahaʼi Faith. Both are Manifestations of God in their own right. The lives and missions of the Bab and Bahaʼu’llah are inextricably linked. Together\, these Divine Messengers are the twin Manifestations of God for this era. \nIn 1844\, in Shiraz\, at age 25\, the Bab declared that He had been called by God to be humanity’s gateway to a new and glorious future. As one of God’s Divine Educators\, the Bab established a new religion.  He called for the people to prepare for the coming of “Him Whom God shall make manifest\,” another Divine Messenger Who would soon appear and initiate an era of global justice\, unity\, and peace. The Bab was an advocate of the poor. He supported the advancement of women\, universal education\, and the study of science—radical ideas in that time and place. \nIn April of 1863\, Baha’u’llah announced that He was the Promised One foretold by the Bab and all of the Divine Messengers of the past. Baha’u’llah’s Mission was to spiritually re-awaken humanity and unite all the peoples of the world. Through Baha’u’llah God has released a fresh\, far-reaching\, creative spiritual energy into the world. Baha’u’llah’s teachings shed new light on God’s eternal relationship with humanity and offer a vision of infinite hope and healing. \nIn the Kitab-i-Aqdas\, the central book of the Baha’i Faith\, which is the main source of Baha’i law and practices\, Bahaʼu’llah wrote that His birthday and that of Bab “are accounted as one in the sight of God.” \nTheir birthdays are observed on the first and the second day following the occurrence of the eighth new moon after the Baha’i New Year\, which is called Naw-Ruz\, and occurs on the first day of spring as determined in advance by astronomical tables using Tehran as the point of reference. This results in the observance of the Twin Birthdays moving\, year to year\, from mid-October to mid-November in the Gregorian calendar. \nSourced from https://www.bahai.us/bahai-house-of-worship-hosts-broadcasts-for-twin-holy-birthdays

SUMMARY:International Pronouns Day
DESCRIPTION:International Pronouns Day began in 2018 and takes place on the 3rd Wednesday of October each year. Individuals and groups participate in grassroots activities that they determine at the local level. The campaign has no central body\, although this is the only official website. Grassroots social justice advocates are empowered to generate their own resources/adaptations. Local organizers should seek to center the voices\, needs\, and interests of trans/nonbinary people/leaders\, particularly those who face multiple marginalizations\, in their planning efforts. Advocates are encouraged to consider the many possible layers of work from media to education to community resourcing to policies and practices that promote belonging and justice. \nSourced from https://pronouns.org/day

SUMMARY:Ayathrem
DESCRIPTION:Ayathrem is associated with vegetation\, believed to be the first sign of life after creation. This festival marks the return of cattle from grazing in faraway lands. Zoroastrians celebrate it on the 206th to 210th days\, usually October 12 to 16. \nZoroastrians observe six seasonal festivals that celebrate the sanctity of God’s universal creations. Each Gahambar lasts five days and honors the five material creations: earth\, water\, plants\, animals and humans. Believers spend the first four days reciting scriptures and come together on the last day for a feast. \nSourced from https://theguibordcenter.org/zoroastrian-holy-days-and-observances/

SUMMARY:Dussehra
DESCRIPTION:Dussehra\, in Hinduism\, holiday marking the triumph of Rama\, an avatar of Vishnu\, over the 10-headed demon king Ravana\, who abducted Rama’s wife\, Sita. The festival’s name is derived from the Sanskrit words dasha (“ten”) and hara (“defeat”). Symbolizing the victory of good over evil\, Dussehra is celebrated on the 10th day of the month of Ashvina (September–October)\, the seventh month of the Hindu calendar\, with the appearance of the full moon\, an event called the “bright fortnight” (shukla paksha). Dussehra coincides with the culmination of the nine-day Navratri festival and with the tenth day of the Durga Puja festival. For many\, it marks the beginning of preparation for Diwali\, which occurs 20 days after Dussehra. \n\nDussehra is celebrated with great fervour and fanfare. In North India\, it incorporates Ram Lila\, a gala theatrical enactment of Rama’s life story. Effigies of Ravana—often along with those of Meghnada (Ravana’s son) and Kumbhkarana (Ravana’s brother)—are stuffed with firecrackers and set ablaze at night in open fields. \nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/topic/Dussehra
