SUMMARY:National Coming Out Day
DESCRIPTION:National Coming Out Day is an annual celebration which takes place on 11 October every year. It was first celebrated on the one-year anniversary of the 1987 National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights – a date chosen to honour the bravery of LGBTQ+ individuals who decide to come out and live openly. Although it started off as an American awareness day\, the meaning of National Coming Out Day is still highly relevant to LGBTQ+ communities across the world today. \nComing out is a unique experience for each LGBTQ+ person. It’s not a one-time event; many LGBTQ+ individuals who come out to their closest friends and family may later come out at work or school\, to their extended family\, or to casual acquaintances. \nFor some\, coming out is no longer a big deal – it can be a simple matter of correcting someone’s assumptions about you\, or introducing your partner. For others\, coming out is still a huge challenge. The very real fear of facing discrimination\, bullying\, or judgement can cause LGBTQ+ people to stay ‘in the closet’\, struggling with anxiety while they strive to be themselves. \nSourced from https://www.stonewall.org.uk/about-us/news/why-do-we-need-national-coming-out-day

SUMMARY:Feast of St. Francis
DESCRIPTION:St. Francis of Assisi\, Italian San Francesco d’Assisi\, baptized Giovanni\, renamed Francesco\, in full Francesco di Pietro di Bernardone\, (born 1181/82\, Assisi\, duchy of Spoleto [Italy]—died October 3\, 1226\, Assisi; canonized July 16\, 1228; feast day October 4)\, founder of the Franciscan orders of the Friars Minor (Ordo Fratrum Minorum)\, the women’s Order of St. Clare (the Poor Clares)\, and the lay Third Order. He was also a leader of the movement of evangelical poverty in the early 13th century. His evangelical zeal\, consecration to poverty\, charity\, and personal charisma drew thousands of followers. Francis’s devotion to the human Jesus and his desire to follow Jesus’ example reflected and reinforced important developments in medieval spirituality. The Poverello (“Poor Little Man”) is one of the most venerated religious figures in Roman Catholic history\, and he and St. Catherine of Siena are the patron saints of Italy. In 1979 Pope John Paul II recognized him as the patron saint of ecology. \n\n\nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/biography/Saint-Francis-of-Assisi/Franciss-vision-and-the-stigmata-of-the-Crucified

SUMMARY:Navaratri 2024
DESCRIPTION:Navratri\, (Sanskrit: “Nine Nights”) in full Sharad Navratri\, Navratri also spelled Navaratri\, in Hinduism\, major festival held in honour of the divine feminine. Navratri occurs over 9 days during the month of Ashvin\, or Ashvina (in the Gregorian calendar\, usually September–October). It often ends with the Dussehra (also called Vijayadashami) celebration on the 10th day. In some parts of India\, Dussehra is considered a focal point of the festival\, making it effectively span 10 days instead of 9. Additionally\, as Navratri depends on the lunar calendar\, in some years it may be celebrated for 8 days\, with Dussehra on the 9th. There are four similar festivals\, also called Navratri\, which are held at various stages of the year. However\, the early autumn festival\, also called Sharad Navratri\, is the most significant. It begins on the same day as Durga Puja\, a 10-day festival devoted to the victory of the goddess Durga\, which is particularly celebrated in certain eastern states. \nNavratri is celebrated differently in India’s various regions. For many people it is a time of religious reflection and fasting\, while for others it is a time for dancing and feasting. Among fasting customs are observing a strict vegetarian diet and abstaining from alcohol and certain spices. Dances performed include garba\, especially in Gujarat. Typically\, the festival’s nine nights are dedicated to different aspects of the divine feminine principle\, or shakti. While the pattern varies somewhat by region\, generally the first third of the festival focuses on aspects of the goddess Durga\, the second third on the goddess Lakshmi\, and the final third on the goddess Sarasvati. Offerings are often made to the goddesses and their various aspects\, and rituals are performed in their honour. One popular ritual is Kanya Puja\, which takes place on the eighth or ninth day. In this ritual nine young girls are dressed as the nine goddess aspects celebrated during Navratri and are worshipped with ritual foot washing and given offerings such as food and clothing. \nAmong some followers of the goddess Durga\, who are particularly predominant in Bengal and Assam\, the festival is known as or coincides with the Durga Puja (“Rite of Durga”). Special images of Durga commemorating her victory over the buffalo-headed demon Mahishasura are worshipped daily\, and on the 10th day (Dussehra) they are taken in jubilant processions to nearby rivers or reservoirs for immersion in water. In addition to family observances\, the puja\, or ritual\, days are also celebrated with public concerts\, recitations\, plays\, and fairs. \nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/topic/Navratri

SUMMARY:Rosh Hashanah 2024
DESCRIPTION:Rosh Hashanah\, the Jewish New Year\, is one of Judaism’s holiest days. Meaning “head of the year” or “first of the year\,” the festival begins on the first day of Tishrei\, the seventh month of the Hebrew calendar\, which falls during September or October. Rosh Hashanah commemorates the creation of the world and marks the beginning of the Days of Awe\, a 10-day period of introspection and repentance that culminates in the Yom Kippur holiday\, also known as the Day of Atonement. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the two “High Holy Days” in the Jewish religion. \nSourced from https://www.history.com/topics/holidays/rosh-hashanah-history

SUMMARY:Mehregan
DESCRIPTION:Mehregan is the Persian Festival of Autumn\, honoring Mehr\, the goddess of light\, friendship\, love and kindness. A reminder of Zoroastrianism’s “good words\, good deeds and good thoughts\,” the festival also celebrates the fall harvest. It takes place on the 10th of the month of Mehr\, usually in October. \nOn the occasion\, believers set up a table with the Khordeh Avesta (a book of prayers)\, a mirror\, and a sormeh dan (container of kohl eyeliner). The table also holds flowers\, vegetables and fruits\, rosewater\, sweets\, nuts\, and incense. At lunchtime\, family members stand in front of the mirror to pray. After drinking sherbet\, everyone rubs kohl around their eyes as a good omen. They embrace and toss herbs and seeds over each other’s heads. In the evening\, celebrants recite prayers\, light bonfires and fireworks\, and enjoy a feast. \nSourced from https://theguibordcenter.org/zoroastrian-holy-days-and-observances/

SUMMARY:Paitishahema
DESCRIPTION:The third festival of Paitishahema commemorates earth’s creation and the fall harvest. It takes place on the 176th to 180th days (September 12 to 16). \nZoroastrians observe six seasonal festivals (Gahambar) that celebrate the sanctity of God’s universal creations. Each Gahambar lasts five days and honors the five material creations: earth\, water\, plants\, animals and humans. Believers spend the first four days reciting scriptures and come together on the last day for a feast. \nSourced from https://theguibordcenter.org/zoroastrian-holy-days-and-observances/

SUMMARY:Enkutatash (Ethiopian New Year)
DESCRIPTION:Every year on September 11\, Ethiopians celebrate their New Year. The holiday is called “Enkutatash\,” which literary means the “gift of jewels.” This naming came from the legendary visit of the Ethiopian Queen Sheba to that of King Solomon of Jerusalem back in 98 BC. During her visit\, this famous queen of Ethiopia brought the king a collection of “jewels.” Upon her return home\, the queen was restocked with a new supply of “enku” (jewels) for her treasury. \nEthiopians called the New Year “Enkutatash” because the period the queen arrived back to Ethiopia coincided with the New Year’s celebration in September. Celebrating the New Year in September\, however\, is originally connected to the Bible as it is the period that God created the Heavens and the Earth and so this period should be the beginning of a New Year. \nIn Ethiopia\, the month of September is called Meskerem. It is a month Ethiopians say goodbye to the three months rainy and thunderous winter and look forward to the pleasant spring weather. It is a month that everyone will be filled with a new spirit of hope for the New Year. \nSourced from https://addisjemari.org/enkutatash-ethiopian-new-year/

SUMMARY:Ganesh Chaturthi (Vinayaka Chaturthi) 2024
DESCRIPTION:Ganesh Chaturthi\, also called Vinayaka Chaturthi\, in Hinduism\, 10-day festival marking the birth of the elephant-headed deity Ganesha\, the god of prosperity and wisdom. It begins on the fourth day (chaturthi) of the month of Bhadrapada (August–September)\, the sixth month of the Hindu calendar. \nAt the start of the festival\, idols of Ganesha are placed on raised platforms in homes or in elaborately decorated outdoor tents. The worship begins with the pranapratishtha\, a ritual to invoke life in the idols\, followed by shhodashopachara\, or the 16 ways of paying tribute. Amid the chanting of Vedic hymns from religious texts like the Ganesh Upanishad\, the idols are anointed with red sandalwood paste and yellow and red flowers. Ganesha is also offered coconut\, jaggery\, and 21 modaks (sweet dumplings)\, considered to be Ganesha’s favourite food. \nAt the conclusion of the festival\, the idols are carried to local rivers in huge processions accompanied by drumbeats\, devotional singing\, and dancing. There they are immersed\, a ritual symbolizing Ganesha’s homeward journey to Mount Kailas—the abode of his parents\, Shiva and Parvati. \nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/topic/Ganesh-Chaturthi

SUMMARY:International Day of Charity
DESCRIPTION:The International Day of Charity was established with the objective of sensitizing and mobilizing people\, NGOs\, and stakeholders all around the world to to help others through volunteer and philanthropic activities. \nCharity\, like the notions of volunteerism and philanthropy\, provides real social bonding and contributes to the creation of inclusive and more resilient societies. Charity can alleviate the worst effects of humanitarian crises\, supplement public services in health care\, education\, housing and child protection. It assists the advancement of culture\, science\, sports\, and the protection of cultural and natural heritage. It also promotes the rights of the marginalized and underprivileged and spreads the message of humanity in conflict situations. \nIn the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development adopted in September 2015\, the United Nations recognizes that eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions\, including extreme poverty\, is the greatest global challenge and an indispensable requirement for sustainable development. The Agenda also calls for a spirit of strengthened global solidarity\, focused in particular on the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable. It also acknowledges the role of the diverse private sector\, ranging from micro-enterprises to cooperatives to multinationals\, and that of civil society organizations and philanthropic organizations in the implementation of the new Agenda. \nThe 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set forth in the Agenda can be grouped into six critical areas: people\, planet\, prosperity\, peace\, and partnership. They have the potential to transform our lives and our planet by providing the framework needed for philanthropic institutions to enable all people to contribute to the betterment of our world. \nSourced from https://www.un.org/en/observances/charity-day

SUMMARY:Paryushana 2024
DESCRIPTION:The most important Jain religious observance of the year\, Paryushana literally means “abiding” or “coming together.” Lasting either eight or ten days\, it is a time of intensive study\, reflection\, and purification. It culminates with a final day that involves confession and asking for forgiveness. \nParyushana is the most important Jain religious observance of the year. For both Shvetambaras\, who observe the festival over a period of eight days\, and Digambaras\, for whom Paryushana Parva lasts ten days\, this is a time of intensive study\, reflection\, and purification. It takes place in the middle of the four-month rainy season in India\, a time when the monks and nuns cease moving about from place to place and stay with a community. Paryushan means\, literally\, “abiding” or “coming together.” The monks and nuns who have to maintain fixed residence during the rainy season abide with the laity and are available to them for instruction and guidance. It is also a time when the laity take on various temporary vows of study and fasting\, a spiritual intensity similar to temporary monasticism. In this respect\, it bears comparison with periods of rigorous religious practice in other traditions\, such as the Christian observance of Lent. Paryushana concludes with a time of confession and forgiveness for the transgressions of the previous year. \nSourced from https://pluralism.org/paryushana-and-the-festival-of-forgiveness

SUMMARY:National Grief Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:On August 30\, National Grief Awareness Day recognizes the time it takes to heal from loss doesn’t have a prescribed course and is a reminder closure comes in many forms. When a loved one dies\, the void they leave affects everyone differently.\nThroughout the day\, take stock of those in your life who have been affected by a form of loss.  The death of a loved one\, a close friend or enduring an extreme change in their lifestyle can trigger grief. When we lose the stability of shelter\, a job or a routine we have known for years\, we suffer a type of loss that requires closure. Some adjust to these changes easily\, and others take time to become familiar with new routines.
