SUMMARY:Tisha B’av 2024
DESCRIPTION:Tisha B’av (The Ninth of Av) is a day of mourning and fasting. The holiday commemorates various tragedies that befell the Jewish people throughout history\, particularly the destruction of the two temples in 586 BCE and 70 CE. It is believed that many of the tragedies remembered on Tisha B’Av actually occurred on this date. Tisha B’av is the culmination of a three-week period of mourning. \nSourced from https://toriavey.com/what-is-tisha-bav

SUMMARY:International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples
DESCRIPTION:Every 9 August commemorates the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples\, chosen in recognition of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations held in Geneva in 1982. \nThere are an estimated 476 million indigenous peoples in the world living across 90 countries. They make up less than 5 per cent of the world’s population\, but account for 15 per cent of the poorest. They speak an overwhelming majority of the world’s estimated 7\,000 languages and represent 5\,000 different cultures. \nIndigenous Peoples are inheritors and practitioners of unique cultures and ways of relating to people and the environment. They have retained social\, cultural\, economic and political characteristics that are distinct from those of the dominant societies in which they live. Despite their cultural differences\, indigenous peoples from around the world share common problems related to the protection of their rights as distinct peoples. \nIndigenous Peoples have sought recognition of their identities\, their way of life and their right to traditional lands\, territories and natural resources for years. Yet\, throughout history\, their rights have been violated. Indigenous Peoples today\, are arguably among the most disadvantaged and vulnerable groups of people in the world. The international community now recognizes that special measures are required to protect their rights and maintain their distinct cultures and way of life. \nSourced from https://www.un.org/en/observances/indigenous-day

SUMMARY:Muktad (Fravardeghan Days)
DESCRIPTION:Zoroastrians following the Shenshai calendar observe Muktad during the last 10 days of the religious year. During this time\, they believe\, the fravashis (spirits) of the righteous departed return to Earth. Believers welcome them with special rituals and offerings. \nFamilies dress in white and cover their heads before visiting the fire temple. Each day\, they pour fresh water into silver or copper vases\, where departed ancestors are thought to stay. The families offer roses and other flowers\, fruit\, and vegetarian food\, while priests recite prayers and burn incense. \nSourced from https://theguibordcenter.org/zoroastrian-holy-days-and-observances/

SUMMARY:Feast of the Transfiguration
DESCRIPTION:Transfiguration\, in the New Testament\, the occasion upon which Jesus Christ took three of his disciples\, Peter\, James\, and John\, up on a mountain\, where Moses and Elijah appeared and Jesus was transfigured\, his face and clothes becoming dazzlingly bright. The Transfiguration is recorded in all three of the Synoptic Gospels (Mark 9:2–13; Matthew 17:1–13; Luke 9:28–36) and is understood to have been the revelation of the eternal glory of the second person of the Trinity\, which was normally veiled during Christ’s life on earth. The event can also be interpreted as an anticipatory Resurrection appearance\, and the presence of the two prophets is often taken to signify Christ’s fulfillment of the Mosaic Law and the prophecies of the Hebrew Bible (the Christian Old Testament). The Feast of the Transfiguration is celebrated in the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches on August 6\, and the Transfiguration is ranked alongside Jesus’ baptism and the Crucifixion\, Resurrection\, and Ascension as a key milestone of his life and ministry. \nIn the Gospel accounts\, after foretelling his death and Resurrection\, Jesus and his three disciples went to “a high mountain” to be away from the crowds. There\, Jesus’ face began to shine like the sun and his clothes became miraculously white. As the disciples looked on\, Elijah and Moses suddenly appeared in glory and talked with the transfigured Jesus. Peter then offered to make three dwellings\, one for Jesus and one for each of the two supernatural guests\, but was interrupted by a voice from a bright cloud that said\, “This is my Son\, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!” (Matthew 17:5). Having collapsed in fear\, the disciples were comforted by Jesus\, who then urged them to keep silent about these events until after his Resurrection (Mark 9:9; Matthew 17:9). According to tradition\, the event took place on Mount Tabor. The Transfiguration is also referenced in the Second Letter of Peter\, where Peter’s presence as an eyewitness to Christ’s majesty is used to assure the readers that his message is true (1:16–18). \nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/topic/Transfiguration-Christianity

SUMMARY:Lammas/Lughnasadh
DESCRIPTION:Lammas\, also known as Lughnasad\, or Lughnassadh\, is a pagan holiday and one of the eight Wiccan sabbats during the year. Each sabbat marks a seasonal turning point. The sabbat occurs on August 1\, which is about halfway between the summer solstice (Litha) and the fall equinox (Mabon). This holiday celebrates the grain harvest. Grain is a very important crop for most civilizations. If the grain was left in the fields for too long\, or if the bread made from the grain was not baked in time\, families might starve. \nIn early Ireland\, it was not good to harvest grain before Lammas. If you did harvest before then\, that meant that that the harvest from the previous year ran out before the next harvest was ready. This meant that the farmers would have failed in providing for their community. On Lammas\, the first sheaves of grain were cut\, and by that night\, the first loaves of bread for the season would have been baked. The word Lammas comes from an Old English phrase that translates to “loaf mass.” In early Christianity\, the first loaves of the season were blessed by the church during mass. \nIn some traditions\, this day honors the Celtic god\, Lugh. This celebration of the god\, Lugh is referred to as Lughnasad (pronounced Loo-NAS-ah). Lugh is the god of craftsmanship; he is skilled in many things\, including blacksmithing\, wheel making\, and fighting. There is some discrepancy as to why Lugh is honored on this day. Some tales say that this is the date of Lugh’s wedding feat. Other stories say it is because he held a harvest fair in honor of his foster mother\, Tailtiu\, on this date. \nModern day pagans bake breads and cakes to celebrate the historical grain harvest (and subsequent bread making). Some observers celebrate with a harvest ritual. This ritual typically involves decorating an altar with symbols of the season. Some of these symbols include scythes (because they are used to cut the grain)\, corn\, grapes\, apples\, and/or any other crops that might be harvested at this time. Some of these rituals involve casting a circle\, and saying some words that symbolize their thanks to the earth for the harvest. After the ritual\, everyone there eats some bread together\, and may also drink wine to wash it down. To honor Lugh\, people make crafts and decorations for their house\, to represent his skills in those areas. And as with most sabbats\, there is feasting. This feast usually is prepared with one’s harvested crops at this time (if they have their own garden). \nSourced from https://www.bpl.org/blogs/post/the-origins-and-practices-of-lammas-lughnasad

SUMMARY:National Minority Donor Awareness Day
DESCRIPTION:National Minority Donor Awareness Day focuses attention on the need for minority donors. The day highlights the need\, especially among minorities\, for more organ\, eye\, and tissue donors. Another focus of the day includes honoring minorities who have donated. While providing education\, the day also encourages others to register as donors. At the same time\, part of being informed includes practicing good health habits. SUMMARY:International Friendship Day
DESCRIPTION:The International Day of Friendship was proclaimed in 2011 by the UN General Assembly with the idea that friendship between peoples\, countries\, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities. \nThe resolution places emphasis on involving young people\, as future leaders\, in community activities that include different cultures and promote international understanding and respect for diversity. \nTo mark the International Day of Friendship the UN encourages governments\, international organizations and civil society groups to hold events\, activities and initiatives that contribute to the efforts of the international community towards promoting a dialogue among civilizations\, solidarity\, mutual understanding and reconciliation. \nThe International Day of Friendship is an initiative that follows on the proposal made by UNESCO defining the Culture of Peace as a set of values\, attitudes and behaviours that reject violence and endeavour to prevent conflicts by addressing their root causes with a view to solving problems. It was then adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1997. \nSourced from https://www.un.org/en/observances/friendship-day

SUMMARY:Birthday of Haile Selassie I
DESCRIPTION:This is one of the holiest days of the Rastafarian year. It is celebrated with Nyahbinghi drumming\, hymns and prayers. Born in 1892 as Tafari Mahonnen\, Ras Tafari ruled Ethiopia as regent and crown prince from 1916 to 1928\, and in 1930 was crowned emperor. This was when he became his Imperial Majesty\, Emperor Haile Selassi I\, a name that means ‘Power of the Trinity’. \nHaile Selassie was Ethiopia’s 225th and last emperor\, serving from 1930 until his overthrow in 1974 by the Marxist dictator Mengistu Haile Mariam. He traced his line back to Menelik I\, who was credited with being the child of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. His birth had been foretold by astrologers\, who foretold the great drought that started in 1889 and was broken at the moment of the child’s birth\, thus confirming his identity and destiny. His teachers were astounded at the depth of his knowledge and his understanding of ancient Indic religious texts. It is claimed that he could also converse with animals\, and that savage beasts became docile in his presence. He was a skilled linguist\, who learnt to read and write in Amharic and Ge’ez – and also in French. \nFor a country trying to gain its foothold in the world and seeking to curry favour with the West\, the progressive Ras Tafari came to symbolize the hopes and dreams of Ethiopia’s younger population. In 1923 he led Ethiopia into the League of Nations. The following year\, he travelled to Europe\, becoming the first Ethiopian ruler to go abroad. \nMany of the Jamaican descendants of former slaves regarded Ethiopia as the symbol of all Africa\, so the crowning of the new emperor was regarded as a highly propitious event. The Rastafari movement emerged in the 1930s\, in large part inspired by the vision of Marcus Garvey and focussed on the belief that Haile Selassie was a divine being and the redeemer of the black people. Although the anticipated mass repatriation to Africa has not occurred\, the movement has spread throughout much of the world\, largely through immigration and the interest generated by reggae music – most notably\, that of Bob Marley. For the more than a million Rastafarians worldwide\, the anniversary of the birth of Haile Selassie is considered one of the most significant days of the Rasta year. \nSourced from https://www.reonline.org.uk/festival_event/birthday-of-haile-selassie-i

SUMMARY:Pioneer Day
DESCRIPTION:Completing a treacherous thousand-mile exodus\, an ill and exhausted Brigham Young and fellow members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints arrived in Utah’s Great Salt Lake Valley on July 24\, 1847. The Mormon pioneers viewed their arrival as the founding of a Mormon homeland\, hence Pioneer Day. The Mormons\, as they were commonly known\, left their settlement in Nauvoo\, Illinois\, and journeyed West seeking refuge from religious persecution. The final impetus for their trek was the murder of founder and prophet Joseph Smith on June 27\, 1844. \nDetermined to settle in an isolated region\, the pioneers made their way across the plains and over the Rocky Mountains to Utah. They lost many of their party to disease during the winter months. By the time they reached Utah\, the desolate valley was a welcome sight. Potatoes and turnips were soon planted\, and a dam was built. With solemn ceremonies\, the settlers consecrated the two-square-mile city\, and sent back word that the “promised land” had been found. By the end of 1847\, nearly 2\,000 Mormons had settled in the Salt Lake Valley. \n\nJuly 24 is still celebrated as Pioneer Day in Utah and several other Western states. The bravery of the original settlers and their strength of character and physical endurance is commemorated with festivities including games and music\, speeches\, parades\, rodeos\, and picnics. \n\n\nSourced from https://www.loc.gov/item/today-in-history/july-24

SUMMARY:Asalha Puja
DESCRIPTION:Asalha Puja Day\, also referred to as Dharma Day\, is one of the most important holy days for Buddhists. This day of celebration and new beginnings typically falls in July\, on the full moon of the eighth month of the lunar calendar. Asalha Puja Day commemorates the establishment of Buddhism. It represents the day that Buddha gave his first sermon as well as other foundational aspects; therefore\, this celebration is beloved among Buddhist people. \nBelievers hoping to share the gospel with their Buddhist friends should understand this significant holiday. \nWhat is Asalha Puja Day?\nBuddhism’s founder and leader\, Buddha\, was believed to be a wealthy prince before leaving his life of luxury to live a life of self-discipline and discovery. During the following six years\, it is believed that Buddha accomplished enlightenment on his own. According to Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard\, enlightenment is defined as\, “a state of perfect knowledge or wisdom\, combined with infinite compassion.” Following his enlightenment\, Buddha sought out five disciples to entrust his findings to. The sermon he preached to them is recognized as the beginning of Buddhism. \nAsalha Puja Day celebrates the first of Buddha’s teaching and the foundation of Buddhism. During his first sermon\, it is believed that Buddha shared four noble truths as well as the first Wheel of Dharma (dharma means truth or “path to enlightenment”)\, which are still honored in modern-day Buddhism. Buddhists believe these core teachings lead to a life of nirvana and enlightenment. Andrew Olendzki\, a professor at Lesley University\, defines Nirvana as “the highest state of profound well-being a human is capable of attaining. The mind awakens from delusion\, is liberated from bondage\, is cleansed of all its defilements\, becomes entirely at peace\, experiences the complete cessation of suffering\, and is no longer reborn.” Asalha Puja Day offers Buddhists a chance to show their appreciation to the Buddha for sharing his knowledge with them and other teachers. \nBuddhist monks play a large role in celebrating Asalha Puja Day. They recite the eight precepts\, teach sermons\, lead meditation\, perform chants\, and facilitate candle-lit precessions around their temples. Monks perform a chant of what is said to be Buddha’s first teaching. Asalha Puja Day also marks the start of a three-month mandatory retreat for monks. Buddhist people visit temples on this day to pray\, meditate\, listen to sermons\, and give offerings. This is a day of new beginnings\, renewal\, and recommitment to the faith for Buddhists. They reflect and try to focus on practicing dharma. \nSourced from https://blog.eastwest.org/what-is-asalha-puja-day

DESCRIPTION:Ashura marks the death anniversary of Hussain ibn Ali\, a 7th-century revolutionary leader who was killed in The Battle of Karbala. The Day of Ashura is recognized by millions across the world to remember Hussain’s dignified stand for social justice. \nHussain ibn Ali was the grandson of Muhammad (the last prophet of Islam)\, born in 620 AD. Hussain grew up with stories of compassion and dignity his grandfather displayed\, and as such became a leader who was known widely for his compassion\, wisdom\, and integrity. \nNot long after the death of Muhammad\, the Islamic Empire had fallen back into old habits. Hussain saw his grandfather’s teachings eroded by the caliph Yazid. Slowly the moral fabric of society began to decay as Yazid ruled with his own interests in mind. \nHussain was highly respected within society\, and his endorsement would carry great weight. Yazid needed a man like Hussain to follow his rule in order to provide legitimacy to his corrupt government. But Hussain was a man of morals and strived for social justice. Hussain could not sit and endorse Yazid and spoke out against him\, despite it being a risk to his life. \nHussain chose to make the ultimate stand for social justice. He chose to leave his hometown along with his family and a few companions. When word reached Yazid of Hussains stand\, he sent an army of 30\,000 to force Hussain to obey his rule. \nYazid knew full well that Hussain had a great amount of influence and that what started as a small stand with his family and companions could become a stand of tens of thousands of people. Thus\, Yazid gave Hussain an ultimatum. Either obey him or die. \nHussain did not want any violence and did not want anyone to die\, however\, he knew he could not sit and obey Yazid\, so he chose instead to stick to his principles. Having refused to obey him\, Yazid ordered his men to kill Hussain on the 10th day of the first month of the Islamic calendar (Muharram). This day is known as The Day of Ashura. \nThe Day of Ashura is mourned and remembered by millions of people across the world as the day Hussain and his supporters were killed in The Battle of Karbala. Today\, pilgrims from all across the world visit the shrine of Hussain ibn Ali in Karbala where he is buried\, to pay their tribute to his courageous stand. \nOn the day of Ashura many Muslims partake in large peaceful gatherings where they recite poems in memory of Hussain and his sacrifice whilst lamenting and beating their chest as a cultural tradition to display their grievance. Many people use the day of Ashura as a day to perform acts of kindness and charity as a way for them to keep alive the very same principles and values Hussain gave his life for. \nSourced from https://whoishussain.org/who-is-hussain/the-day-of-ashura

SUMMARY:Bastille Day
DESCRIPTION:Bastille Day\, in France and its overseas départements and territories\, holiday marking the anniversary of the fall on July 14\, 1789\, of the Bastille\, in Paris. Originally built as a medieval fortress\, the Bastille eventually came to be used as a state prison. Political prisoners were often held there\, as were citizens detained by the authorities for trial. Some prisoners were held on the direct order of the king\, from which there was no appeal. Although by the late 18th century it was little used and was scheduled to be demolished\, the Bastille had come to symbolize the harsh rule of the Bourbon monarchy. During the unrest of 1789\, on July 14 a mob approached the Bastille to demand the arms and ammunition stored there\, and\, when the forces guarding the structure resisted\, the attackers captured the prison and released the seven prisoners held there. The taking of the Bastille signaled the beginning of the French Revolution\, and it thus became a symbol of the end of the ancien régime. \n\nJuly 14\, often called la fête nationale in France\, became an official holiday in 1880. From the beginning\, speeches\, military parades\, and fireworks\, along with public revelry\, were part of the celebration. The slogan “Vive le 14 juillet!” (“Long live the 14th of July!”) has continued to be associated with the day. The holiday came to be celebrated in the former French colonies and is observed in those places maintaining links to France. French Polynesia especially came to be known for its adaptation of the holiday to its own culture\, with singing\, dancing\, and drumming performances and competitions held throughout the month of July. In addition\, Francophiles worldwide have taken up the observance of Bastille Day\, celebrating with dinners of French cuisine\, for example\, or with concerts of French music. \nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/topic/Bastille-Day

SUMMARY:The Martyrdom of the Bab
DESCRIPTION:Baha’is around the world will observe the Martyrdom of the Báb. This holiday commemorates the 1850 execution of the co-founder of the Baha’i faith\, the Báb\, in Persia. It is one of nine holy days during which work and school is suspended. \nOn July 9\, 1850 the Báb\, who was thirty years old at the time\, was charged with apostasy and shot by order of the Prime Minister of the Persian Empire. Apostasy is the abandonment or rejection of a religious belief. There is much speculation and mystery surrounding the execution. Some accounts state that the Báb and one of his companions were suspended on a wall where they were shot by a large firing squad. But\, when the smoke cleared after the first firing of bullets\, the Báb was missing. It is said that he was was found back in his prison room finishing dictation to his secretary. There are several other interpretations of this miracle story. Even so\, they all agree that the Báb survived the first firing squad\, and was killed by the second. \nFor many years after the Báb’s death\, his followers secretly transported his body from place to place to avoid the desecration of his remains. The Báb was fianlly laid to rest at the Shrine of the Báb in Haifa on the middle terrace of the Bahá’í Gardens. \nBahá’í’s commemorate the Martyrdom of the Báb with prayers and scripture. Specifically\, the Bahá’í scripture called Tablets of Visitation. This scripture signifies the passing of an important figure. \nSourced from https://www.bpl.org/blogs/post/the-origins-and-practices-of-holidays-the-martyrdom-of-the-bab/

SUMMARY:Islamic New Year
DESCRIPTION:The Islamic New Year takes place during the first month of the Hijrī\, or Muslim lunar calendar. Though majority-Islamic countries are governed by the solar Gregorian calendar\, the lunar calendar is used to calculate the dates of religious feasts and important observances such as the Hajj pilgrimage. Because the Hijrī relies on the movements of the moon\, the Muslim calendar has just 354 or 355 days\, making it about 11 days shorter than the solar Gregorian calendar with 365 days (366 in leap years).Umar I\, the second Muslim caliph\, instituted the calendar in 639 C.E. as part of a broader attempt to standardize and organize Islamic life and traditions—and possibly so the calendar would stand apart from those used by other religions. \nUmar set the beginning of the calendar on an important anniversary: the summer in 622 C.E. during which the Prophet Muhammad and his followers are said to have migrated in secret from Mecca\, the city in Saudi Arabia where the prophet was born\, to Medina. That migration\, also known as Hijrah\, was an attempt to escape religious persecution\, and the date is widely seen as the beginning of Islam both as an organized religion and political institution. \nThough the Hijrī calendar has a distinct starting point\, the days and times its months begin can vary by region because it relies on the first sighting of the new crescent moon. \nSourced from https://www.nationalgeographic.com/history/article/what-is-the-islamic-new-year-and-how-is-it-celebrated?loggedin=true&rnd=1684965529446

SUMMARY:Independence Day (Fourth of July)
DESCRIPTION:The Fourth of July—also known as Independence Day or July 4th—has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941\, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution. On July 2nd\, 1776\, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence\, and two days later delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence\, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 to the present day\, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence\, with festivities ranging from fireworks\, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues. \nSourced from https://www.history.com/topics/holidays/july-4th

SUMMARY:Canada Day
DESCRIPTION:Canada Day\, formerly (until 1982) Dominion Day\, the national holiday of Canada. The possibility of a confederation between the colonies of British North America was discussed throughout the mid-1800s. On July 1\, 1867\, a dominion was formed through the British North America Act as approved by the British Parliament. It consisted of territories then called Upper and Lower Canada and of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The act divided Canada into the provinces of Ontario and Quebec\, and it included provisions for other colonies and territories to join in the future\, which made possible the growth of Canada into its present form. The act served as Canada’s constitution until 1982\, and July 1 was celebrated as Dominion Day. \nBy terms of the Canada Act of 1982\, the British North America Act was repatriated from the British to the Canadian Parliament\, and Canada became a fully independent country. At the same time\, the name of the national holiday was changed to Canada Day. It is celebrated with parades\, displays of the flag\, the singing of the national anthem\, “O Canada\,” and fireworks. When July 1 falls on a Sunday\, the holiday is observed on the following day. \nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/topic/Canada-Day

SUMMARY:Maidyoi-shema
DESCRIPTION:Believers observe the midsummer festival of Maidyoi-shema on days 101 to 105 of the year\, typically June 29 to July 3. It celebrates the creation of water\, the spring harvest’s end\, and the start of the summer harvest. \nZoroastrians observe six seasonal festivals (Gahambar) that celebrate the sanctity of God’s universal creations. Each Gahambar lasts five days and honors the five material creations: earth\, water\, plants\, animals and humans. Believers spend the first four days reciting scriptures and come together on the last day for a feast. \nSourced from https://theguibordcenter.org/zoroastrian-holy-days-and-observances/

SUMMARY:Victory Day (The Battle of the Little Bighorn - 1876)
DESCRIPTION:The Battle of the Little Bighorn—also called Custer’s Last Stand or the Battle of Greasy Grass—marked the most decisive Native American victory and the worst U.S. Army defeat in the long Plains Indian War. \nUnder skies darkened by smoke\, gunfire and flying arrows\, 210 men of the U.S. Army’s 7th Cavalry Unit led by Lt. Colonel George Custer confronted thousands of Lakota Sioux and Northern Cheyenne warriors on June 25\, 1876\, near the Little Big Horn River in present-day Montana. The engagement was one in a series of battles and negotiations between Plains Indians and U.S. forces over control of Western territory\, collectively known as the Sioux Wars. \nIn less than an hour\, the Sioux and Cheyenne had won the Battle of the Little Bighorn\, killing Custer and every one of his men. \nSourced from https://www.history.com/news/little-bighorn-battle-facts-causes \n  \n

SUMMARY:Summer Solstice
DESCRIPTION:Summer solstice\, the two moments during the year when the path of the Sun in the sky is farthest north in the Northern Hemisphere (June 20 or 21) or farthest south in the Southern Hemisphere (December 21 or 22). \nAt the summer solstice\, the Sun travels the longest path through the sky\, and that day therefore has the most daylight. When the summer solstice happens in the Northern Hemisphere\, the North Pole is tilted about 23.4° (23°27´) toward the Sun. Because the Sun’s rays are shifted northward from the Equator by the same amount\, the vertical noon rays are directly overhead at the Tropic of Cancer (23°27´ N). Six months later\, the South Pole is inclined about 23.4° toward the Sun. On this day of the summer solstice in the Southern Hemisphere\, the Sun’s vertical overhead rays progress to their southernmost position\, the Tropic of Capricorn (23°27´ S). \n\nAccording to the astronomical definition of the seasons\, the summer solstice also marks the beginning of summer\, which lasts until the autumnal equinox (September 22 or 23 in the Northern Hemisphere\, or March 20 or 21 in the Southern Hemisphere). The day has also been celebrated in many cultures. For example\, in Scandinavia\, the holiday of Midsummer’s Eve is observed on a weekend near the time of the solstice. \nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/science/summer-solstice-astronomy

SUMMARY:Juneteenth
DESCRIPTION:(also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day) \nJuneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston\, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. On June 17\, 2021\, it officially became a federal holiday. \nConfederate General Robert E. Lee had surrendered at Appomattox Court House two months earlier in Virginia\, but slavery had remained relatively unaffected in Texas—until U.S. General Gordon Granger stood on Texas soil and read General Orders No. 3: “The people of Texas are informed that\, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States\, all slaves are free.” \nSourced from https://www.history.com/news/what-is-juneteenth
