SUMMARY:Women's History Month
DESCRIPTION:Every year\, March is designated Women’s History Month by presidential proclamation. The month is set aside to honor women’s contributions in American history. \nDid You Know? Women’s History Month started as Women’s History Week . . . \nWomen’s History Month began as a local celebration in Santa Rosa\, California. The Education Task Force of the Sonoma County (California) Commission on the Status of Women planned and executed a “Women’s History Week” celebration in 1978. The organizers selected the week of March 8 to correspond with International Women’s Day. The movement spread across the country as other communities initiated their own Women’s History Week celebrations the following year. \nIn 1980\, a consortium of women’s groups and historians—led by the National Women’s History Project (now the National Women’s History Alliance)—successfully lobbied for national recognition. In February 1980\, President Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the Week of March 8th 1980 as National Women’s History Week. \nSubsequent Presidents continued to proclaim a National Women’s History Week in March until 1987 when Congress passed Public Law 100-9\, designating March as “Women’s History Month.” Between 1988 and 1994\, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women’s History Month. Since 1995\, each president has issued an annual proclamations designating the month of March as “Women’s History Month.” \nSourced from https://www.womenshistory.org/womens-history/womens-history-month

SUMMARY:Losar
DESCRIPTION:Known as Losar\, the Tibetan New Year is the most important celebration in the Tibetan calendar\, which consists of twelve lunar months. Losar corresponds to the first day of the first month of the Tibetan calendar. Losar is observed in several countries\, including Tibet\, Bhutan\, Nepal\, and India\, and takes different forms depending on where it is celebrated. \nDuring the fifteen-day celebration\, Tibetan families reunite to engage in a variety of activities that symbolize purification and welcome the arrival of the new year. Part of this involves cleaning one’s home from top to bottom\, having new clothes made for the family to wear during the festival\, and cooking different food offerings made of butter or tsampa (roasted flour) to be placed on the family altar. \nTibetan Buddhists visit their local monastery\, where religious ceremonies featuring songs\, readings of sacred texts\, dances\, and music are organized. Many offerings are made\, prayer flags are hung\, blessings are exchanged\, and butter lamps are lit. \nLosar is also an opportunity to appreciate delicious Tibetan food such as dresil (sweet rice)\, khapsey (Tibetan cookies)\, and guthuk (noodle soup). Different varieties of meat\, bread\, butter tea\, and other dishes are served to guests who are invited to celebrate the holiday. During this period\, chang (rice alcohol) is also very much enjoyed for drinking or making an offering. \nSourced from https://asia.si.edu/whats-on/blog/posts/happy-losar/

SUMMARY:International Mother Language Day
DESCRIPTION:International Mother Language Day has been observed every year since February 2000 to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. \nLanguages\, with their complex implications for identity\, communication\, social integration\, education\, and development\, are of strategic importance for people and the planet. Yet\, due to globalization processes\, they are increasingly under threat or disappearing altogether. When languages fade\, so does the world’s rich tapestry of cultural diversity. Opportunities\, traditions\, memory\, unique modes of thinking and expression — valuable resources for ensuring a better future — are also lost. \nAt least 43% of the estimated 6000 languages spoken in the world are endangered. Only a few hundred languages have genuinely been given a place in education systems and the public domain\, and less than a hundred are used in the digital world. \nLanguages are the most powerful instruments for preserving and developing our tangible and intangible heritage. All moves to promote the dissemination of mother tongues will serve not only to encourage linguistic diversity and multilingual education but also to develop fuller awareness of linguistic and cultural traditions throughout the world and to inspire solidarity based on understanding\, tolerance\, and dialogue. \nEvery two weeks a language disappears taking with it an entire cultural and intellectual heritage. \nLinguistic diversity is increasingly threatened as more and more languages disappear. Globally 40 percent of the population does not have access to an education in a language they speak or understand. Nevertheless\, progress is being made in mother tongue-based multilingual education with a growing understanding of its importance\, particularly in early schooling\, and more commitment to its development in public life. \nMultilingual and multicultural societies exist through their languages which transmit and preserve traditional knowledge and cultures in a sustainable way. \nhttps://www.un.org/en/observances/mother-language-day

SUMMARY:Dawes Act (1887)
DESCRIPTION:The Dawes Act (sometimes called the Dawes Severalty Act or General Allotment Act)\, passed in 1887 under President Grover Cleveland\, allowed the federal government to break up tribal lands. The federal government aimed to assimilate Native Americans into mainstream US society by encouraging them towards farming and agriculture\, which meant dividing tribal lands into individual plots. Only the Native Americans who accepted the division of tribal lands were allowed to become US citizens. This ended in the government stripping over 90 million acres of tribal land from Native Americans\, then selling that land to non-native US citizens. \nSourced from https://www.nps.gov/articles/000/dawes-act.htm

SUMMARY:National Freedom Day
DESCRIPTION:February 1st is National Freedom Day in the United States. National Freedom Day is celebrated because on February 1st\, 1865 Abraham Lincoln signed the joint resolution from the House and the Senate that eventually became the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution—the amendment that officially ended slavery in the United States. \nThis year and every year\, make it a point to celebrate National Freedom Day and use it as an opportunity to educate others about the importance of becoming a modern day abolitionist. \nAdditionally\, National Freedom Day is a great time to learn more about your country’s relationship with slavery—as understanding the struggle of historical slavery is crucial when trying to eradicate modern day slavery. \nSourced from http://www.endslaverynow.org/act/action-library/honor-national-freedom-day

SUMMARY:Maghi
DESCRIPTION:Sikhs and Hindus\, especially in India’s Punjab region\, both observe the first day of the month of Magh. In Sikhism\, Maghi honors the martyred Chali Mukte (40 Liberated Ones)\, killed as they resisted an attack on Guru Gobind Singh. The battle took place on 30 Poh (December 29)\, 1705 in Muktsar\, Punjab. The fallen were cremated the next day\, 1 Magh\, which generally falls on January 14 or 15. Hindus across India and Nepal celebrate the event as a harvest festival\, known by Makar Sankranti\, Pongal\, Uttarayan\, and other names. \nMaghi customs include recitals of the entire Guru Granth Sahib\, bathing in holy water\, charitable giving\, and eating kheer (sweet rice porridge). The largest celebration takes place over three days in Muktsar. Believers bathe in the Sarovar (sacred pool) and visit shrines associated with the battle. On the third day\, they walk together from the main shrine to the Tibbi Sahib gurdwara\, sacred to Guru Gobind. \nSourced from https://theguibordcenter.org/faiths/sikhism/sikh-festivals-and-observances/

SUMMARY:Indian Self-Determination Act of 1975
DESCRIPTION:Indian Self-Determination is the ability for tribal communities to shape their own destinies\, unencumbered by external forces which may undermine their authority. \nIn the years following the disastrous policy of Termination\, the United States federal government began shifting its energies towards investing in tribal autonomy as a way of managing Indian affairs. Beginning formally with a 1961 Commission on the Rights\, Liberties\, and Responsibilities of the American Indian concluding that top-down initiatives lacking cooperation with tribal community members are destined for failure\, officials in Washington began realizing how fraught a paternalistic approach to Indian policy is. What evolved from this 1961 commission\, and the American Indian Chicago Conference later that year in June\, which brought together 450 tribal delegates from 90 nations\, was a decade of growing support for Indian self-determination. \nBy the middle of the 1960’s\, Indian self-determination found growing favor in Washington D.C. from officials such as Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall. Between 1961 and 1975\, the policy of termination was halted completely as self-determination showed far greater promise in meeting the needs of tribal communities suffering from years of federal intervention. On January 4th\, 1975\, the Indian Self-Determination Act was passed\, the culmination of years of activism\, policy work\, and careful collaboration among communities across Indian Country. \nSourced from https://www.potawatomiheritage.com/encyclopedia/indian-self-determination-act

SUMMARY:World Braille Day
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, we work to get Braille into the hands of more blind people. January 4 marks World Braille Day in celebration of its creator\, Louis Braille. Every day\, thousands of blind people use Braille for everything from shopping lists to labels for canned goods\, from reading novels to solving math and scientific equations\, from learning a piece of music to composing one. The increasing availability of Braille signs makes it easier for blind people to get around hotels\, office buildings\, government facilities\, university campuses\, and more. Braille is as flexible as print\, can be learned in roughly the same amount of time\, and can be read just as fluidly. \nSourced from https://nfb.org/celebrate-world-braille-day

SUMMARY:Feast Day of St. Basil
DESCRIPTION:Saint Basil the Great\, (born AD 329\, Caesarea Mazaca\, Cappadocia—died Jan. 1\, 379\, Caesarea; Western feast day January 2; Eastern feast day January 1)\, Early church father. Born into a Christian family in Cappadocia\, he studied at Caesarea\, Constantinople\, and Athens and later established a monastic settlement on the family estate at Annesi. He opposed Arianism\, which was supported by the emperor Valens and his own bishop Dianius\, and organized resistance to it after 365. He succeeded Eusebius as bishop of Caesarea in 370. He died shortly after Valens\, whose death in battle opened the way for the victory of Basil’s cause. More than 300 of his letters survive; several of his Canonical Epistles have become part of canon law in Eastern Orthodoxy. \n\n\n\n\nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/biography/Saint-Basil-the-Great

SUMMARY:Maidyarem
DESCRIPTION:The midwinter festival of Maidyarem celebrates the evolution of animals. The fifth Gahambar falls on days 286 through 290\, typically December 31 to January 4. \nZoroastrians observe six seasonal festivals that celebrate the sanctity of God’s universal creations. Each Gahambar lasts five days and honors the five material creations: earth\, water\, plants\, animals and humans. Believers spend the first four days reciting scriptures and come together on the last day for a feast. \nSourced from https://theguibordcenter.org/zoroastrian-holy-days-and-observances/

SUMMARY:Wounded Knee Massacre (Day of Reflection)
DESCRIPTION:Wounded Knee Massacre\, (December 29\, 1890)\, the slaughter of approximately 150–300 Lakota Indians by United States Army troops in the area of Wounded Knee Creek in southwestern South Dakota. The massacre was the climax of the U.S. Army’s late 19th-century efforts to repress the Plains Indians. It broke any organized resistance to reservation life and assimilation to white American culture\, although American Indian activists renewed public attention to the massacre during a 1973 occupation of the site. \n\n\nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/event/Wounded-Knee-Massacre

SUMMARY:Christmas
DESCRIPTION:Christmas\, Christian festival celebrating the birth of Jesus. The English term Christmas (“mass on Christ’s day”) is of fairly recent origin. The earlier term Yule may have derived from the Germanic jōl or the Anglo-Saxon geōl\, which referred to the feast of the winter solstice. The corresponding terms in other languages—Navidad in Spanish\, Natale in Italian\, Noël in French—all probably denote nativity. The German word Weihnachten denotes “hallowed night.” Since the early 20th century\, Christmas has also been a secular family holiday\, observed by Christians and non-Christians alike\, devoid of Christian elements\, and marked by an increasingly elaborate exchange of gifts. In this secular Christmas celebration\, a mythical figure named Santa Claus plays the pivotal role. \n\n\nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/topic/Christmas

SUMMARY:Winter Solstice
DESCRIPTION:Winter solstice\, the two moments during the year when the path of the Sun in the sky is farthest south in the Northern Hemisphere (December 21 or 22) and farthest north in the Southern Hemisphere (June 20 or 21). At the winter solstice the Sun travels the shortest path through the sky\, and that day therefore has the least daylight and the longest night. (See also solstice.) \nWhen the winter solstice happens in the Northern Hemisphere\, the North Pole is tilted about 23.4° (23°27′) away from the Sun. Because the Sun’s rays are shifted southward from the Equator by the same amount\, the vertical noon rays are directly overhead at the Tropic of Capricorn (23°27′ S). Six months later the South Pole is inclined about 23.4° away from the Sun. On this day of the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere\, the Sun’s vertical overhead rays progress to their northernmost position\, the Tropic of Cancer (23°27′ N). \n\nAccording to the astronomical definition of the seasons\, the winter solstice also marks the beginning of the season of winter\, which lasts until the vernal equinox (March 20 or 21 in the Northern Hemisphere\, or September 22 or 23 in the Southern Hemisphere). After the solstice\, the days get longer\, and the day has thus been celebrated in many cultures as a time of rebirth. \nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/science/winter-solstice

SUMMARY:Advent 2024
DESCRIPTION:Advent\, (from Latin adventus\, “coming”)\, in the Christian church calendar\, the period of preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas and also of preparation for the Second Coming of Christ. In Western churches\, Advent begins on the Sunday nearest to November 30 (St. Andrew’s Day) and is the beginning of the liturgical year. In many Eastern churches\, the Nativity Fast is a similar period of penance and preparation that occurs during the 40 days before Christmas. The date when the season was first observed is uncertain. Bishop Perpetuus of Tours (461–490) established a fast before Christmas that began on November 11 (St. Martin’s Day)\, and the Council of Tours (567) mentioned an Advent season. \nThe liturgical meaning of the Advent season referred to the dual “coming” of Jesus—then Roman Catholicism the traditional liturgical colour for Advent is violet; many Protestant denominations have adopted blue or purple. The third Sunday of Advent\, known as Gaudete Sunday\, is commonly marked by the use of rose-coloured vestments and candles. \nSourced from https://www.britannica.com/topic/Advent

SUMMARY:The Day of the Covenant
DESCRIPTION:The Day of the Covenant is a Baha’i holy day honoring the Covenant of Baha’u’llah and\, in particular\, ‘Abdu’l-Baha (1844–1921) as the “Centre of the Covenant.” …the Covenant established by Baha’u’llah protects the Baha’i religion from schism. In anticipation of his eventual passing\, Baha’u’llah called on all Baha’is to turn to ‘Abdu’l-Baha (Baha’u’llah’s eldest son) as successor (inerrant leader of the Baha’i community)\, interpreter (authorized exponent of Baha’u’llah’s teachings)\, and exemplar (perfect embodiment of Baha’i virtues and morality). This triple function has been as powerful in its influence on the future course and fortunes of the Baha’i community as ‘Abdu’l-Baha’s station is conceptually and functionally distinctive\, and remains so. \nSourced from https://www.bahai.us/day-of-the-covenant

SUMMARY:Transgender Day of Remembrance
DESCRIPTION:Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) was started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester\, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death\, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. \n“Transgender Day of Remembrance seeks to highlight the losses we face due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. I am no stranger to the need to fight for our rights\, and the right to simply exist is first and foremost. With so many seeking to erase transgender people — sometimes in the most brutal ways possible — it is vitally important that those we lose are remembered\, and that we continue to fight for justice.” – Transgender Day of Remembrance founder Gwendolyn Ann Smith \nhttps://www.glaad.org/tdor

SUMMARY:World Diabetes Day
DESCRIPTION:World Diabetes Day (WDD) was created in 1991 by IDF and the World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes. SUMMARY:Remembrance/Veteran's Day
DESCRIPTION:World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” – officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28\, 1919\, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles\, France. However\, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice\, or temporary cessation of hostilities\, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason\, November 11\, 1918\, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.” \nVeterans Day continues to be observed on November 11\, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. The restoration of the observance of Veterans Day to November 11 not only preserves the historical significance of the date\, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism\, love of country\, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. \nSourced from https://department.va.gov/veterans-day/history-of-veterans-day
